@feoh The answer, as always, is Capitalism. Smart people have been doing smart work on making computers better, more accessible, and generally easier to use and develop for over many decades. We have systematically thrown all of that work away over and over and over again, chasing dollars. It's all still out there, we have just chosen to drop the threads because selling something new is more profitable than improving something old.

I am sick to my stomach with transgender people being unfairly and cruelly targeted by people in power, and I often feel helpless about it. All I can do is offer a safe space and speak up, but that's not enough.

I’m doing surprisingly well, all things considered, but every single day I’m thinking of how I can get out of the tech industry and not touch computers any more. It’s all I’ve known for 30 years, but I find it utterly objectionable these days. I wish I was young enough to join the trades.

I used to lie to myself and say that tech was about solving problems. Solving problems is FUN! It’s the only thing I’ve ever liked about software and hardware. But that lie has fallen apart. Tech is about making already rich and powerful people even more unfathomably rich and powerful off the backs of captive audiences, and that’s it. That’s all it is now. Yuck! Who wants that? I just want to make things and fix things and make people happy.
