@brettpeary @evan that's not so easy to pinpoint. If you have an instance only for yourself, you'll get along with a shared bist for a few dollars per month (there are also Mastodon hosting services, that start at around $10). But Mastodon is in itself not very resource friendly. A single user instance can cost $50 per month if that user has 20k followers.

@evan we need to communicate more about alternatives as well. #Pleroma for example might not have the same feature set but it's otherwise very compatible to Mastodon and eats less than 10% of the resources. #Misskey is very feature rich, eats more resources than Pleroma but is still easier on the server than mastodon.

@sef @evan I looked into it and Mastodon supports OpenID Connect for SSO.At Open Collective, we currently support OAuth 2.0, so OpenID Connect is not too far away.That would solve some part of the problem!

@mateus Sure.Things are looking very bad at Twitter, which means that its hundreds of millions of users are going to be seeking Mastodon accounts soon.I don't think the current set of servers is enough to host them all.So, if you want to help a lot of people stay connected, one way to do it is to set up a Mastodon server.

@evan @mateus But still rewarding, in a way. Years ago I've been running gnusocial.de and people using it from time to time, but very constantly, thanked for the service. The even asked where to throw money to. Both is something I see people still doing on their nodes nowadays.Still, I consider it the duty of public node admins to put up a solid financial basis, a long term strategy and being transparent about it. @evanI got a bit spooked reading that thread about the DMCA implications of running an instance in the US. Is there guidance out there for similar issues in Canada? I have the financial wherewithal to run a server but maybe not for incorporating and hiring lawyers.
