@strypey Wow, as soon as I see the word circles, it reminds me that new G+ people complained about it being "confusing" just as some complain about Mastodon. I think G+ was great, but it wasn't because of circles, but despite them IMO. I wish them well, regardless, with #Bonfire. A thousand flowers and all that.

Alice Ball: 1st woman & first African American to receive a master's degree from University of Hawaii, and became the university's first female and African American chemistry professor. 50 yrs after her death, she was finally credited for her important work treating leprosy. https://openculture.com/2022/12/the-chemist-alice-ball-pioneered-a-treatment-for-leprosy-in-1915-and-then-others-took-credit-for-it.html#BlackMastodon #BlackHistory

"Saxophone Colossus", the Sonny Rollins biography, seven years in the writing, just came out. I'm reading it now, but I already know this is the best musician bio I've ever read. Learning about what made Sonny great is inspiring. Details of his life, his father and the racism they faced even just after WWII, shows the courage and determination this family had.https://amzn.to/3IAYAJr#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackMusic #BLM #Jazz #Saxophone #Books

Sonny Rollins' father was in the Navy for 27 years, a spotless career. He had many white friends and they used to party and play poker in his quarters. He was railroaded into prison because of the racism in the Navy at that time (and long after!). Fraternity between the races was illegal. The adversity that Sonny faced did not make him hate white people, like his father, he enjoys all kinds and always has.#BlackMastodon

The Hayes (movie censorship) Committee did not allow people of different races to hold hands. Many states criminalised interracial marriage with prison sentences and expulsion from the state after prison. Reading this book is a journey into that world and of course the trip through Sonny Rollins' life is amazing.#BlackMastodon

@atomicpoet I'm not here for that. I'm here because I like what it brings to me. The vast majority don't care what's under the hood. I'm only vaguely interested in that myself.

@publius @atomicpoet Of course how well a platform is executed matters, but the *average* user does not care about federation or even want to know about it at all. All they care about is getting the experience they want. Part of that are features like block, bookmark, etc., but how these things are done, protocols, etc. have no meaning for them. The other thing is app quality, since most will be on an app. I'm ok with the existing Mastodon apps, but they're not everyone's cup of tea.
