I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon. It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team. It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

@leo dot-social and which other?tbf throwing money at dot-social *does* finance the busiest instance, and dev to keep that site up should ripple back into smaller instances being able to run better/more cheaply.But if you aren't on one of those big two instances, definitely worth checking if your own instance needs the money first :)

@leo I'd say if you are able and want to donate, maybe split your donation between the devs and your local host. The $1 per month plan for the devs seems like more of a tip / pat on the back for them to keep up the good work. Then maybe see if your host has a donation page and kick them as much as you wish, maybe $5 (cup of coffee) per month seems reasonable. A nice 1:5 ratio for devs to host, increase the amounts as you see fit.

@leo As a server admin, I feel that supporting the development effort does support my own server. Just because the dollars donāt trickle down, doesnāt mean that we donāt benefit in other ways, through well-maintained code, not to mention access to the developers through Discord (not to mention supporting two of the largest instances, which are bound to uncover bugs and security gaps before my instance does).I get what youāre saying, but some may interpret your message as discouraging people from participating in the āofficialā Patreon.@frumble Perhaps @atomicpoet was being a little hyperbolic when he said that Mastodonās āvery survivalā is at stake, but I donāt think it rises to the level of āmisinformation.ā He was just pointing out that it costs real money to maintain code and servers, and itās incumbent upon those who can, to at least consider putting a few bucks toward that effort. If nothing else, it honors those whoāve put a lot more hours into building this community as well as its infrastructure.

@leo I was confused about those posts as well. I donated to my instance server account my 2nd day after realizing I would be staying. If all #twexit blue ppl took that $8/mo and apply it to their instance/server, that seems to be the best way. I was skeptical at first when I saw the link though and had to research it and the account posting it thoroughly. Iāve been jaded by other platforms

I've seen an interesting trend with some instances that are quite niche where they work together to try to get folks signed up to sister instances say closer to people geography. Helps with load balancing and probably is better for the whole ecosystem.

@leo There was some guy on my instance being really aggressive about donating to the Mastodon non-profit because of the "millions of new accounts" and how we need to support.Supporting the dev team is fine but it really has nothing to do with keeping up with the new accounts unless you happen to be on one of those instances.He was insulting people trying to explain the nuances and replying to every donator calling them a hero. It was super bizarre.

I have posted about supporting the Mastodon Patreon and am supporting, but I also support, at much higher levels, two of the servers/instances Iām on. That feels right to me: $10 a year to the big org, at least for now, to support what they do, and $5-10 a month to my homes here.

I can't wait for that day (not long from now) when we all stop talking about what we had or did on Twitter, and start luxuriating in all the things we can do here that were never possible there. Not ever. And Twitter was was never really a very good microblogging app. It's been stilted, walled, and innovation-free for most of its existence. It was never all that. @leo I wish someone would grab a megaphone and say "THIS IS NOT TWITTER" for like an hour straight. I'm seeing so much Twitter behavior out there, and it's a bit distressing. Lots of hot takes, not a CW in sight, tons of heavy media usage without thinking of the cost to the instance owners who run things out of kindness. @leo I did support through Patreon (first), with the understanding I was supporting my instance, as Patreon asked me which one I wanted to direct to, then shows my payment going directly to it.Too, it seems like it should be a little less tricky to directly support the people who run your instance, as I am very happy to do so, and think most of us are. Itās the spirit of this place. This may just come with time.

@leo Supporting the dev team that develops the software that independent admins host, comes down to us in the form of platform improvements. Sure, it's nice to get direct support for our hosting / co-locating costs, etc., but we also want general improvement and patronage for the project itself. Both/and not either/or.
