Lots of #TwitterMigration newcomers here (many of them old friends, yay !).WELCOME ! Mastodon is a cute little pachyderm who has a reputation of being more complicated than it really is. Lots of guides are making the rounds (I have some advice as my pinned toot myself). Don't let yourself be intimidated, most of what you'll read is just basic common sense (talk to people, be nice, use the tools provided by the platform, etc.).Lots of people are answering questions on #/MastodonHelp !

Here are my own recommendations :1/ Use the advanced web interface (...if on web, obviously). It'll allow you to pin several columns and that makes Mastodon even better and richer !2/ Get to know the 3 different timelines : "Home" (toots from the people & hashtags you follow, or toots that they boost), "Local timeline" (people from the same instance as you, in real time), "Federated timeline (almost all of the instances, in real time). Local is my recommendation if you're just starting.

3/ If you're from the #TwitterMigration, don't make the mistake I made at first : talk to strangers instead of trying to recreate your Twitter timeline. Open the local and/or federated timelines and talk to people. Say nice things to cat pictures. Roast Twitter with someone. Welcome another newcomer. Most people are cool and nice (and you can make sure you are one of those people too !) so take advantage of the general atmosphere to build something breathable.

@ladyteruki I can also highly reccomend Sengi as a fediverse client. Especially if you run several accounts for any reason.

4/ Recently Mastodon has added the ability to follow not just people but also hashtags ! Use the search bar to look for a hashtag you're interested in (I picked one completely at random here...). You can see everything happening on it. You can click on the icon with the + (second screenshot) to follow the hashtag. From this point on, messages with this hashtag will appear on your home. If you click the settings icon (third screenshot) you'll also gain the ability to pin that column permanently.

5/ Spend more time interacting with people. There is no algorithm here, and being viral is less of a goal. What matters is socializing (you'd think it'd be obvious on a social platform !). Another mistake I made for a long while on Mastodon was to wait for things to happen. They don't. Be proactive ! Talk about what you like (use a lot of hashtags), talk to other people, boost other people. Passivity is not really an option if you want to feel at home here.

6/ A few things are considered normal here that weren't on Twitter. Although it's understandable you have your own habits, this is not Twitter2 here so get used to :- adding image description to your images (upload an image, then click on it to add your text)- using CW (Content Warning) VERY liberally to your toots (anything that can trigger trauma is considered BASIC common courtesy)- boosting people on top of or instead of liking, when they deserve to be seen. Lack of algorithm, remember ?

7/ Yes, you're gonna need to have your own memes/gifs on your device. There is no functionality to access Giphy's database here. But other than that you absolutely can meme on Mastodon, so knock yourself out.8/ Servers are overburdened these days especially at some times during the day. You're not the only one from the #TwitterMigration ! Be patient. If you are on an instance that welcomes it, remember to tip your instance admins if that is possible to you. They deserve it :)

Lastly ? HAVE FUN.Aside from the very serious people on academic instances and such, we're all here to have a good time. Make new friends. Welcome old ones. Talk to people. Use hashtags...The rest will come :) I promise. It did for me, so no reason it can't for you.

Here's my previous attempt at being helpful, I think I more or less said the same thing then, but in case you want to check for yourself :https://mastodon.social/@ladyteruki/109342598652011590(oh yeah, we don't do QRT here... and that's by design)

If someone reads this hours after the fact, I really recommend learning to use the tabs within your Notifications column.- You can decide what appears in "All" (which means fewer notifications overall)- You can select an individual tab to check ONLY your new follows, for instance (which is nice to do a mass follow later)The only thing I'm still puzzled about is the "Updates from people you follow" tab, which is ALWAYS empty for me. Without that the system is already nicely flexible.

I really recommend to newcomers, particularly if they don't have a lot of people to interact with just yet, to do what you've probably seen others do (and if you haven't, you REALLY need to do it XD ), which is write a presentation message with the hashtag #/introduction, and if you want, a few others so that likeminded people find you easily....and I say this as someone who has never done it herself, of course ! #doasisay
