I understand the anti-algorithm movement on here, but I think it's a little over-zealous.I want algorithms, but algorithms that *I control*. Right now, no matter who I follow, the posts I see are heavily biased toward those in similar time zones to me and I think a carefully designed algorithm could reverse that bias.Perhaps even something as simple as 'show me 40 random toots from the past 24 hours of my timeline' would be wonderful.

Algorithms that act to compensate for bias could have so much value!I want to hear from people that post every hour, but I also want to hear from those that post every week. Right now, it's impossible to follow these two people without the former drowning out the latter.A way to opt into ranking posts according to how rarely the account posts so I don't miss out from some people would be lovely.

I should probably just learn more about Mastodon's internals and actually implement something like this myself...

@jsbarretto doesn't lists do this? (Does Mastodon have lists?) You can put people into a list and it's like a timeline of only those member's posts - works nicely for me

@paul It doesn't eliminate that bias though, unless I do some sort of absurd bin-packing thing and maintain, say, 30 lists that each have a roughly equal toot frequency, and then rapidly cycle through watching each list. Apart from such a setup being completely unusable, it would also be impossible to maintain without it becoming a second job.

@jsbarretto yeah, very true - works for one or two people, but not for hundreds.I'll bow out of this now as I tend to only interact "in the moment" anyway, I generally ignore posts from days ago so I won't be the best to help here :-)

@paul Thanks for the reminder that lists are a thing though, I'm sure they can solve at least a few issues I still have with Mastodon!

@jsbarrettoAt that point you would be better off forking the mastodon code and making your own algorithm that does such for another list.Let's say each list has a naming scheme then you could easily merge them on that factor. The weekly and monthly posts could be valued on the amount of replies, boosts, and favorites, and injected accordingly. For this to hypothetically work, you will need your own instance.@paul
