Each new generation on the web needs to learn that there’s no such thing as a permanent web identity on a commercial web service. The only long-term solution to maintain your identity is:1. your own domain name2. Your own website/blog3. Several backupsEverything else is temporary. Your accounts on myspace, facebook, medium, twitter, google plus, youtube, tiktok, mastodon will one day disappear or become useless. You don’t have a "community" on those websites. Only ephemeral discussions.

Want to be verified on the whole Internet?Buy a domain name. You will end up paying 8$ a year instead of per month and keep your identity for as long as you live.

@ploum hosting costs money too so it's not just the domain costs

@ploum The items in the bullet points are also temporary.

@ploum I agree with your larger point, but I mean… I was in a densely networked IRL organization for 19 years before it folded, and I necessarily lost touch with most of my looser ties in that group when it did, but that doesn’t mean it was never a real community. Communities don’t need to last forever to count.

@ploum But you don't have a domain name on this infra either. Only an ephemeral reference, that ownership requires a payment and can be turned over, confiscated or pre-jacked without recourse.Get me a correct solution for point (1) and I'll believe in a "long-term" internet identity.

@ploum there are very few ID checks when buying a domain name and even registration proxy services if you want to hide your ID.I could buy Donaldtrump.com, yet it does not prove I am Donald Trump. A domain name does not prove your identity.

@patrick @ploum This is not his point. The point is not to link to your physical identity but to your digital identity. You can proove you have control over a domain to other digital services (this is how letsencrypt works for example). The same mechanism can be used to link a Twitter account to a personal website. No one cares if DonaldTrump is a dog. We cares about what the POTUS dog says and do.

@ploum Asymetrical key/pair is more efficient. Transportable. Free.Look at #SSH identity system. I trust that more than my DNS service trying to lure me into a commercial portal.Domains belong to the upper TLD. Can seized. Can have prices raised. Costs a fortune for each human in the world. Has limited namespace.

@ploum@bortzmeyer You are absolutely right. But why do we want something permanent? Can we simply take advantage of the impermanence of a still young technology and even of ever renewed practices?

@josquindebaz @ploum I want permanent things. I want my articles from 20 years ago to be still there (specially when they are referenced from other places). I believe in history and archives.

@ploum I wish it were reliably 8$ a year. I did find such a bargain once, paid for 10y. Next time I pay, it'll be 30$, and I will change then. And it's messy, and I'm frustrated. I just want a low price dns goddamit.

@bortzmeyer @josquindebaz @ploum Which makes me wonder if there is a good way to keep a mirror of your site, I got some via git and rsync.

@Relected @ploum Yeah but what about next year ? If I can put 100$ to have it for 100 year, i'll gladly but it now ; but if not, it's worthless. The price could go x1000 next year, no control on theses.
