Think of people around the world tonight who need Twitter to get their voices heard, to document human rights abuses and injustices, to get attention, expose war crimes, and more. All of them could be about to be cut off because the world’s richest man wanted to own the libs.

@mehdihasan think of Assange who was left high and dry by journos who thought it more pragmatic to lick the boot instead of exposing human rights abuses, war crimes, and injustices.

@mehdihasan Yes, and with a federated, decentralized alternative like Mastodon, they can still have a voice. Funded by the masses on federated servers in hundreds of countries around the globe.

@syrus @mehdihasan Engagement levels on Mastadon are also way better than Twitter

@VickiKyriakakis @syrus @mehdihasan I have really found that, people can have intellectual discussions here, same as with science forums, I wonder if that is actually a barrier for a lot of people, to get the most out of being here you HAVE to engage. Not that having a barrier such as that is a bad thing, if it gets people to change their mindset, it is a good thing.

@mehdihasan @mehdihasan I would say Twitter was cringe before Elon and cringe with Elon. The idea of Twitter in and of itself as a social network was always cringe when federated alteratives such as GNU Social came into life (which was many years ago already).

@zleap @syrus @mehdihasan I’ve seen people who are blue ticks on Twitter open accounts here and just cross post from there and it misunderstands Mastadon completely. Engagement here IS the point. Blue ticks are used to attracting high engagement on Twitter. Here you have to actually engage and converse. Not just throw hot takes out at people.

@VickiKyriakakis @syrus @mehdihasan Thing is, it is possible to set up a 'bot' account that is used to just relay content. So I guess for example a blog which just posts news or other updates can be followed by the 'bot' account. So not all word press blogs allow comments, I think what is still important to monitor how many follow, and boost but at least for a business have an account on here to back up any announcements with a human who can interact.I think over time, people will find there is benefit to doing that.
