@zleap @syrus @mehdihasan I’ve seen people who are blue ticks on Twitter open accounts here and just cross post from there and it misunderstands Mastadon completely. Engagement here IS the point. Blue ticks are used to attracting high engagement on Twitter. Here you have to actually engage and converse. Not just throw hot takes out at people.

No idea if this will work, but have generated a barcode linking to my Mastodon account and popped it in the profile pic of my Twitter account (that I’m no longer active on). Gives me a small buzz of satisfaction to be sticking a tiny finger up at Elno.

@NEETzsche @natematias No it’s not an issue when people are spreading disinformation and hatred of others and stochastic terrorism that ACTUALLY endangers other people. Or promoting insurrection or neo-nazism or anti-semitism or misogyny or anti-science disinformation. Those things are not in the same league as sharing flight paths which are public information. Sick of right wing white victimhood. It’s offensive.

@taylorlorenz @ajsadauskas Anyone still on there is fighting a losing battle. All journos should get off it now, get onto Mastodon and change the rules of the game. The game can’t be played by his rules. Journos are a huge part of the reason Twitter was attractive. If you guys all come here, the right will once again be talking to each other in an echo chamber. Twitter was lost the moment he bought it. Never go back.

@john @alannawrites Because they are monitoring the wrong metric. Any social media manager (of which I was one) will tell you follower count is a meaningless metric on its own. Engagement levels are what counts and Mastodon outperforms birdsite on that front

A reminder that on Mastodon you are the algorithm. If you’re seeing content you don’t want, block or filter it out. Boost things you want more of. You control what you see. It’s better than trying to control others. Focus on curating the kind of feed you’re interested in. If you don’t want to see politics, unfollow people who post or boost a lot about politics. The #birdsite is very passive in terms of what it demands from you. Mastodon isn’t. It’s a mind shift but it’s a good one to make.

Devastated to hear that #JacindaAdern is resigning as NZ PM. She has shown the world that leadership with empathy is not only possible but mandatory. She has been an incredible example for women and girls the world over. In a world filled with sociopathic and psychopathic male leaders she was a shining example that another world is possible. I’m more heartbroken than I can explain but whatever she does next, I know she’ll continue to be incredible force for good in the world.

@pnh @WTL I don’t understand it myself. I’ve tried it and it’s so much less engaging than Mastodon. I’m not sure what the allure is other than that it allows those chasing clout to replicate that experience there.

@shriramk @pnh @WTL It seems far more centralised and people have tended to flock to the big name accounts rather than connecting across the platform. I don’t see people responding as readily with others there outside of those big names. There’s also a ‘tipping’ mechanism that I don’t entirely understand but seems to be there to reward content/tweets. That to me incentivises clout chasing. It’s more directly trying to replicate Twitter.
