@Davidtoddmccarty That's always been the case with Mastodon, however. Aggressive Balkanization with the rites of Safetyism being one of the cores of the state religion. That and Shunning.Nothing interesting or worthwhile ever got done in a safe space. In order to do something useful, you have to take some risk on board.Mastodon is not now, nor has it ever been, for those kind of people.Just look at the UI; as safe a ripoff of Twitter as possible.

@Davidtoddmccarty I'm not sure if you were here before or came after Gab decided to use Mastodon as a server architecture and wanted to be federated with anyone who would – and there was such an uprising that there were active campaigns to shut down any projects which even allowed Federation with Gab.Not allowed for filtering – if a nap didn't come with Gab pre-filtered, there was a brigade to get that application made inaccessible.

@Davidtoddmccarty If there was any question before, that was the major signifier of what the place was going to be.

@Davidtoddmccarty That's a shame. It was incredibly fascinating to watch. If you, like I, am a connoisseur of watching human beings unload shotguns at their own ankles. Watching people literally espouse one thing in one breath and the opposite in the next never gets old.Note that Mastodon design in tents are always focused on the collective, never the individual. Yes, you can block at an individual level – but discussion is usually about cutting off entire servers.

@Davidtoddmccarty I don't think I've seen a single time since the tech was deployed where someone started talking about individual metrics, web of trust systems, mechanisms for sorting and prioritizing content that you might otherwise not have sought out, that ever got any traction. And that's a shame, considering that it's an architecture ripe for that kind of mechanism – and we designed those way back in the early nineties.

@LexTenebris @Davidtoddmccarty "Nothing interesting or worthwhile ever got done in a safe space. In order to do something useful, you have to take some risk on board."Citation needed. Why do I have to allow slurs into my federated feed to do "something interesting"?

@visne @Davidtoddmccarty Because sometimes the person throwing a slur has a point. Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes they're passionate and not thinking clearly about how best to express themselves – but still right. And unless there is the potential for risk, for people to say "dangerous things," you're never going to learn anything that shakes what you already believe. You may choose to live that way – but very little comes out of it worthwhile.

@LexTenebris @Davidtoddmccarty You can express your opinion without saying slurs. I'm not going to allow slurs by mindless harassers for the 0.01% chance that they might say something useful. You can say "dangerous things" in a safe space; it's just that boring repetetive racist and transphobic comments are useless and annoying.Regardless, to me it just seems like you're trying to make a very contrived argument against safe spaces; based on nothing factual or concrete.

@visne @Davidtoddmccarty Good job ignoring everything I said. And in going ahead and straw-manning exactly not what we were talking about. While simultaneously reestablishing exactly what I'm talking about, in that only "you" get to define what "racist and transphobic comments are."I'm trying to point out an observation about the Internet that's come out of multiple decades of exposure. That's not contrived; it's empirical.

@Davidtoddmccarty A techie issue: when I tried to follow your Mastodon link back from the article, Norton gave me a "known dangerous site" flag. I'm not savvy enough to know all the reasons, but possibly just newness of the server? Or bells & whistles not yet tuned? I screenshot it & also the Norton statement & review, if you want copies to share with admin, or whatever. There are already two reviews there objecting to the status. I'm not sure what to suggest, but figured you'd want to know.

@Davidtoddmccarty Looks like this. Far as I know the server owner would have to dispute with Norton. Might not be worth the trouble...I don't have enough perspective.
