The nanny state:First we had the sugar tax. Then they discovered that artificial sweeteners are bad for gut microbial balance, and can cause health problems (likely including weight gain). Then we had the suggestion of a fat tax. Then it was pointed out that most edible fats are beneficial, and fats as a whole are essential to our survival. And now, it seems, 20 mph speed limit which doesn't do what was intended, but has side-effects which are not fully studied.https://nation.cymru/news/new-research-suggests-20mph-speed-limits-have-little-impact-on-road-safety-amid-wales-wide-roll-out/

We jump on these bandwagons when they come along without pausing to fully consider the implications. For example, are we bringing up a generation of children who are not afraid of road traffic, who will then go and kill themselves as soon as they go to another country? Are we causing greater traffic on other roads without 20mph limits, thus increasing accidents there? What about emissions, which for most ice vehicles are lower at 30mph than 20mph?These need proper consideration first.

@AngharadHafod personally I doubt this would make anything better. The issue isn't about a blanket 20 mph speed limit but about drivers driving appropriately.

@Sbectol @AngharadHafod I believe the 20mph limit is due to the much higher chance a pedestrian would survive a collision at that speed than at 30. I believe it wasn't designed to lower collisions but to increase survival rates?

@TedWard Yes, but there is debate as to whether or not it would achieve that. Firstly, because evidednce (see cited study) is that it has minimal effect at the location where the lower speed limit is introduced, and secondly (there is some evidence for this) that it moves accidents elsewhere. Thirdly, I would argue, it tends to lead to pedestrians taking less care - the "seatbelt" effect (when seatbelts laws were first introduced, there were MORE accidents, though fewer were fatal).
