Currently the main problem with friends migrating here has been they signed up on The Default Instance, and The Default Instance has problems that means it's unfederated with here and the like and they can't actually follow me or vica-versa, at which point they get exasperated.Matrix went through a bit (possibly still are?) where they went "we have traction now, no more signups on The Default Instance, it defeats the point", and I'm left wondering if Masto would benefit from the same.

The upside for this is that there is a mechanism to change instances once you settle in. So people have the option of moving, which is a significant improvement to most services out there. The named few instances are growing, but even if it slightly defeats the purpose of federated services, it is still a good direction in my opinion.

@ressu Yeah, but as an introductory experience, "congrats on signing up---you can't actually reconnect with the people you wanted to, so go do all that again" is...trying the patience of even the most eager. At that point migration is academic since there's nothing to migrate.(It also tremendously sucks that m.s *has* said issues, because some of this is on me going "the instance doesn't matter, I guess you could default to that one" to the first friend to try before remembering.)

Yeah, the experience isn't all that great. And if you're running your own instance, it can also be even more frustrating. We did a lot of debugging with @ivan quite a while back when their instance wasn't all that willing to talk with the instance I'm on.

(woo, service announcement that we've unsuspended federation with them because the moderation over there has improved at least :blobcat_mlem: )

@ressu Yepyep, there's weird flaws and expectations on various ends of the overly-complicated-but-underspecified ActivityPub protocol (don't get me wrong, OStatus combination of protocols was even more complicated). For example, last time I checked undoing an action on my Pleroma instance didn't get it undone on Friendica like venera.social. So I can fav a post but never unfav it. 🤷@LionsPhil
