Originally shared this thread on birdsite, but you might find my #writing equally as compelling, here - as I wanted to talk about community in relation to these platforms we choose to use. Since it seems like birdsite is going through an identity crisis, you need to remember that community doesn't live there. It's always been in your heart. You take it with you wherever you go. Never forget that. No platform owns that. You do. #Mastodon #Twitter #TwitterMigration [continued...]

You don't realize this, of course, until a platform shifts course. You invested so much time into building relationships upon it that you can't imagine life without it. Worse yet, you can't take your (unique) social graph with you. It's devastating, but you're not alone. Platforms do not define you. Technology does not define you. They are there to enable you, but that doesn't mean they'll always be there for you (especially when you need them most).

Community is people, not defined by private algorithms and never controlled by one person. That's one thing I've learned about community after catalyzing it across platforms. People remember you not for what you did, but for how you made them feel. That spirit? It's community. The sense of belonging doesn't belong to anybody but you. The tech will change, certainly. The way we connect with one another will change, absolutely.

"Community" started for me in the days of USENET and BBSes (like ISCA). They served their purpose - to help us better connect with one another. Even in using Microsoft NetMeeting, I could never imagine something like Discord! But we're *lending* these platforms *our* attention because it's been the simplest way to connect, commiserate, and collaborate. They still don't own "community," and they don't control its spirit. We take that with us, wherever we go. Twitter is but ONE place to be.

So, as Twitter changes, so must we decide if / how we're to adapt. If Twitter disappears or becomes unstable, inhospitable - not unprecedented - our passions, interests, and need to connect will NOT die with it. It's nothing without real people. Do we outsource our needs again? We yielded direction of our own destiny by joining a greater collective controlled by outside forces ("social media") - as opposed to easily being able to guide our own corner of the internet in days of yore.

Some of us went with the social media stream. This is where people were, now. The world's different today, but that sense of belonging has not dissipated. That's what I'm saying will translate from service to service. There's no one-size-fits-all. Community belongs to you, not the software it runs upon. Human circuitry makes it go. Years ago, this would've been blogged (how quaint). But what good are words you write to connect with others if those words are not readily seen?

If algorithms force you to pay attention to something else for time-on-site? Community doesn't care about algorithms. It cares about itself. It lives and breathes and is guided by those who care about it most. No gatekeeping! The concept has been co-opted, but that's where I've seen a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Just reminding you of its roots, folks. Tech has spoiled us (in a great way). Software experiences are expected to be streamlined and straightforward, for good reason.

We expect low friction, high return. Creators and marketers in kind look to maximize reach potential, but community doesn't. It just is what it is. Community should be seen as more of a guiding light, not an afterthought (and certainly not a checkbox). It rarely gets the attention it deserves, but could serve to benefit anybody who finds it. We long to connect with each other, we don't long to connect with platforms. So, please keep this all in perspective.

I've been doing this for a very long time and I've accrued more than my fair share of experience. I do so wish more companies understood the power, the value of community - and how it could be tapped to better serve an entire ecosystem. There's a reason I've been bullish on the idea of Mastodon and what it brings to the table today. Don't write it off because it's not as easy as you'd want. Don't write it off because those who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

@ChrisPirillo If you really enjoy writing you might like to find a Pleroma instance to join as they have far greater than Mastodon's 500 character limits per post. By default, 1000 and upwards of 5000
