       This week, MastodonART defederating c.im pushed them to expand their mod team, clarify hate speech policies, & unsuspend the account of a Black user who had taken issue with CWs for lived experience.Now toot.community has suspended a transphobic journalist after pressure from several instances.I wish those instances had made better proactive choices but I’m impressed to see how powerful this type of direct action from instances (& individuals) can be here.

       It’s important to acknowledge, however, that harm still occurred as a result of poor moderation choices at c.im. The user who was suspended by c.im admin and harassed by trolls whom admin policy enabled is no longer active in the fediverse. The user was harmed and the larger Mastodon community lost an important voice.

       That harm can’t be undone. Hopefully they & other admins will learn from this, however. And individuals can help hold them accountable.When I posted about the issues at c.im & my intent to stop accepting requests from the instance, several users were surprised & alarmed to learn what had happened there. One of them took their concerns directly to admin at their instance.“Personal defederation” can make a difference too, however small.

       Direct action for users who care about equity in the fediverse:- Know your instance admins & policies. Demand proactive moderation.- White folks, follow & boost marginalized voices calling out safety/equity issues. Our local circles are often siloed & segregated. We can change that.- If you have followers on a problem instance, let them know. If issues continue, staying connected is a safety issue—you risk exposing yourself & your instance to bad actors.
