State of the kiwi fediverse;mastodon.nz: 4850 people, mostly active*mastodon.nzoss.nz: 335 people, about 70 activecloudisland.nz: 129 people, mostly activeThere are some smaller personal and business instances including Kimberly's atsocial.xunil.co.nz and David's at so.fnky.nz, and a scattering of kiwis across general instances.* This figure appears on the About page of every instance, not sure how it decides who's "active".#NZTwits

Instances of other fediverse software like PixelFed and Mobilizon (eg openevents.nz) are harder to find stats for. Would be good to know if there's any other kiwi instances out there. If anybody is keen to set up a new, get in touch and I'll help you find the resources you need. A healthy neighborhood has many streets, so one of them get to crowded ;)

@strypey like do the instances ever become too busy and have to shut down for new people coming in?

@strypey I think there's more than a 'scattering' of us on general instances; but while out here our kiwiness is less important, so you might not notice us.

@strypey Not sure if this is the best way to quote another thread, but looks like we may have another influx in the next week or so… https://mastodon.social/@Pwnallthethings/109306024103811398

@strypey AFAIK active is "anyone who has registered or spoken in the past 30 days" but I couldbe wrong. The number does not decrease if the account is deleted.

@smollestbunny Yes, some servers have closed for new people. mastodon.nz I think set sign-up to approval-required for a while (not sure if that's still on) to slow down the influx. Admins of each server make their own decision based on their own capacity. @strypey

What @zeborah said. The Mastodon software isn't designed to handle millions of people on one instance. It's better for a bunch of reasons to have many smaller instances than a handful of big ones. For one thing, more instances equals more admins and mods, and more eyeballs on any dodgy posts or accounts people are reporting.#Mastodon@smollestbunny

@yojimbo> more than a 'scattering' of us on general instancesBy "a scattering", I mean that you are spread diffusely across many general instances, as opposed to clustered in large numbers on a handful of them. I'd be intrigued to learn that I'm wrong in this assumption ;)How do you think the number of kiwis on general instances compares with the number in them? Less? More? The same?

@Leighghunt> Not sure if this is the best way to quote another threadWorks for me. FediLab now detects a Mastodon link and automatically takes me to the post, instead of opening a browser, which makes me happy :)

Intriguing. I tried to get an update on the account numbers for the .nz Mastodon instances since my state of the kiwi fediverse post. But mastodon.nz no longer has those stats on the about page. Maybe due to it being upgraded to the latest pre-release version of the 4.0 version?

@strypey That's really difficult to enumerate of course :-) We'd expect a % of kiwis in the general instances & topic-focused ones (like scholar.social and so on) that matches our usual diaspora and technical specialties. So the question is more about, how many kiwis are so keen to fly the flag that they would choose a domain-name to match? :-)

@yojimboI guess I just didn't realize that there were more than a handful of kiwis outside our instance prior to Eternal November ;) As you say, if people aren't flying the flag with a .nz domain or a reference in their bio or an intro post, there's no way to know.
