It's wild that just last month, most of the Fediverse was like, "Capitalism is wrong, and if you try to make any money whatsoever on the Fediverse, you're a terrible human being!"And right now there's a sizable contingent who are like, "Pump this baby full of money—we need capitalism!"

What's funny is that, 6 months ago, I said people are going to need to be compensated for their work, and some folks were like, "WHOA! Hold the brakes! You're thinking like a capitalist!"And now, some folks are like, "HEY! Stop being a pinko communist who's trying to oppose free enterprise!"

To be sure, the people who were very anti-capitalist a month ago are still anti-capitalist today. Their stance hasn't changed. Just pointing out an interesting dynamic.

@atomicpoet these people also seem to be anti-journalists being on the platform.

@Sbectol Yep! Personally, I'm not against journalists—although it seems many of them believe I'm hostile. IMO, I don't think the Press realize how much Big Social shafted their industry.

@atomicpoet as an ex-journo, it was an extremely difficult thing to get qualified sources to make comments, and twitter made it slightly easier.. Whilst I understand why people don't like it in the fediverse, what's the alternative?

@Sbectol To be frank, not only should journalists be on the Fediy, it's critical to the long term health of their industry. Here's where I'm coming from. I was an early employee at a Big Social firm. There were lots of conversations about how to corner the market on online news distribution, and siphon dollars away from the legacy media. It worked. And what's preposterous is that the news media seemed happy to have their pockets picked. (Contd.)

@atomicpoet FOSS and adjacent cultures often have a weird blind spot where they are unable to distinguish between people making a modest living and rapacious corporations. The fediverse needs to allow and encourage individuals and small businesses to discuss and promote, and sell their activities therein. The alternative is the all too common model of well paid people doing evil all day in a day job and building something lovely at night for free. Which results in a net win for evil.

@xenogon @atomicpoet Not really an issue with free software since the point you mention is precisely the reason why all free software licences authorize commercial use (and why "no commercial use" licences are a bad idea).

@bortzmeyer @atomicpoet The issue with free software is how do the devs stay alive? If they have to work a day job as well then my point stands. If they rely on donations from people who have to have evil day jobs then my point stands. No-one is free until everyone is free. We need to pay financially for our freedom, and we need to do it without being enslaved by rentier capitalists, or relying on money from those who are, except transitionallly.

@xenogon @atomicpoet I think we agree: developers of free software should be paid and one way (a quite common one in the free software world) is to have a commercial activity on top of it (custom developments, training, support, etc).

@bortzmeyer @atomicpoet Well yes, though I would also advocate cultural change such that free software is regarded as free as in freedom, not free of cost, and most users pay on a pay what you can basis.Ultimately though the model has to extend to the necessities of life, not just software - otherwise it will always be drained indirectly by rentier capitalism.

@atomicpoet Just a reminder that if you're using #yourOwnMoney to fund your business, it isn't #capitalism. What drives short term behaviour by weak management is the tyranny of the #quarterlyEarningsRelease to #shareholders.I get the impression that few of those selling through the #FediVerse suffer this problem.

@TwistedByKnaves> if you're using #yourOwnMoney to fund your business, it isn't #capitalism.I'd put this a bit differently; If you're using your business to make a living from your own labour, it's not capitalism.I don't know who or what @atomicpoet is poking at here. But those of us who were around for the Indymedia experiment can tell you that relying 100% on volunteer labour, from people with relatively rare, in-demand skills, is a recipe for failure.

@bobWhat harm does having corporations blowing their own horn into the 'verse do though? Without The Algorithm to push their posts down people's throats, the only attention they can get is from people who are actually interested in what they post. OTOH while they continue to exist in the offline world, having them in the 'verse is like having them use email and put up websites, it helps normalize the idea that this is a common carrier here for everyone to use.@xenogon @atomicpoet #fediverse
