I see an important outcome to this election - the preservation of democracy itself. That is no small feat. Yes, the divide is still there but the operation of elections was not generally chaotic. Candidates lost and then conceded. A functioning democracy held against all manner of doomsday predictions. For that, I am grateful. There will be more problems as we approach 2024. But more voters voted for Democrats, not for the reinforcement of chaos and removal of our rights. That is the most important message of the moment. This country is not really evenly split: Democrats and liberals outnumber Republicans and conservatives quite a bit, but the structure of our democracy including the electoral college, unequal representation in the senate, and the use of gerrymandering gives the latter an unfair advantage.Without all of the crooked gerrymandering, even with an intense MAGA base, the Republicans would never win another election. More MAGA Than Ever-https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/11/midterms-trump-desantis-dobbs-republicans/672068/

@TonyStark That is one of the first things I noticed is that the R's were conceding. I was bracing for more chaos and it hasn't happened. I am still concerned about the rise in fascism but we may have at least taken one step back from the precipice. I thought TFG did a call out to his supporters to go to the AZ SOS office to contest the vote count? If so, I don't see any reports of that actually happening? That would be an incredibly good sign that his power has indeed waned significantly.

@demvoter Have been reading Republicans evaluating this election this week and seeing them pointing fingers of blame. None of them are willing to admit their run to fascism is a real thing and remains a major threat to democracy and that it’s being rejected. They seem shocked but this is just the beginning of the revolt against the theocratic political state they want and we’re not done.

@TonyStark @demvoter I know this is a common observation, but in the face of a lost election, rather than figure out how to win voters over, to democratically and deliberatively convince people of GOP policies and values, they double down on authoritarian anti-democratic means. But it's anti-democratic before you ever get to voting policy: The GOP do not believe that they should have to talk to, argue, or convince anyone—the bedrock of democratic governance. Democracy is a barrier to their power

@toddo @TonyStark @demvoter I read a columnist last week who wrote she attended a lecture from Noam Chomsky at MIT in 2013. Even back then, he was saying the Republicans weren't a political party anymore, but rather a radical insurrection. He was apparently quoting two researchers, Norman J. Ornstein and Thomas E. Mann. Not linking the column here because it's in French.

@normandc @TonyStark @demvoter oh please link the column (je parle français). Also, yes, many of the anti democratic habits and values were in place for the neo-con GWB administration (in some ways the policies and relinquishing of democratic norms of the Bush administration were worse than Trump). 1/2

@toddo @TonyStark @demvoter very well, here it is, but it's just a column from a local newspaper here.https://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/chroniques/2022-11-08/un-parti-d-insurges-avec-ou-sans-trump.php

@normandc @TonyStark @demvoter that was great, and I agree with her completely. The anti-democratic, anti-reason party was already fully formed by Obama’s first election. Remember McConnell’s statement that he would block everything that the any dem would try to do forever more? Also, here’s the Washington Post article Perrault refers to: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/lets-just-say-it-the-republicans-are-the-problem/2012/04/27/gIQAxCVUlT_story.html

@toddo @demvoter @normandc I’m already getting some odd replies today saying it’s time for Democrats to start being nicer to Republicans as if none of this ever happened or is about to go away.Giving all of that a big pass. It’s the other way around, folks.

@TonyStark @toddo @demvoter @normandc If the shoe was on the other foot, they wouldn't be nice. They'd be pouring salt into our wounds. I don't think we have to be mean, but I have no desire or interest in being sympathetic. Indifference can send a loud and impactful message.

@AgentCarter_SSR @demvoter @toddo @normandc On a similar note, a hate-filled instance full of disinformation including COVID misinformation wants off our blocklist again. Nope.

@demvoter @toddo @MJ @normandc Trump is not the sole problem within the Republican Party, even. It can only be saved if it disentangles itself from the Faustian arrangement it made decades ago with the religious zealots and unredeemable bigots who now make up its base and a significant portion of its elected officials. The message they should get is to create good policy. My money’s on we vote them out until they have to disband. It’ll sure be easier if I’m wrong.

@TonyStark @demvoterI have often wondered if we will ever be done. 🤔 The level of engagement that we have had to maintain since 2016 really isn't living our lives in a way.I tried to conceive if we can ever have a political system that sustains democracy without it being a neverending crusade.I think it's going to involve some deep structural change. Otherwise, we are fighting for stalemates we need to be lucky to get every time. 🤨
