As soon as Mastodon grows, as the user base grows and diversifies, there will be an increase of manipulation of information. It exists across platforms and has the same effects fake accounts have everywhere, see what's going on at Twitter as soon as verification was sold. Vulnerable communities will be hit by this, democracies as well, everyone. Remember Myanmar? We will need to talk about this.

If news organizations, brands, and governments stand up their own servers it will be harder for disinformation to spread. A benefit to the federation over Twitter, FB, and other monopolies of information dissemination.

@anneroth i think this will come down to like trusted instances and their code of conduct. If the account of a large professional is on a wierd looking instance etc.

@jewlez @anneroth I would like something that didn't drag us toward few, larger instances being privileged in this way. I don't have a good solution however!

@john @anneroth as long as the switching between instances is unobstructed i dont see a problem with it. As far as i understood it, mastodons design is very much resilient against against a bit of a larger consolidation of users.

@gme @anneroth yes, prominent newspapers should have their tech-people set up their own instances. Having verified links to the journalists' bylines in the profiles is also a thing they can do. Everything on the newspapers' official domain (or a sub-domain)
