I think I have messed at least part of this up, but theoretically I’m all moved over now to my own server, where I can cause mischief and stop annoying other people.

@james How hard was it to set up? Did you do all the command line stuff, or go with a package server?

@tod I’m using a package server. I have the feeling this isn’t the best nor the cheapest way to go.What’s a little annoying is that Twitter no longer lets me change my username, so my old one is over there…!

@james @tod I'm running mine on digital ocean, one of the cheapest vms. The one thing I ran into was the hard drive filling up. I set up a chron job to clear all media from other servers that my instance had cached once a week.

@medus @tod There is a cron that does that anyway, but may not be set once a week..

@james @tod That's right, I had to change it. It was a long time ago that I got it all set up. I remember now.

@medus @james Oh interesting. I would have assumed it would just reference URLs on the source (remote) server, rather than duplicating on thousands of instances, but I guess that’s better than one server getting hammered if the media gets popular.

@simon Not a very good one - Digital Ocean droplet running a package manager. I see trouble ahead.I was quite tempted with your local server! :)

@james @simon I went with linode. Running mine for $10 a month but I think on an instance of 1 you would probably be fine on a $5 server

@james @simon I am curious if soapbox/rebased would be more resource friendly than mastodon. I have considered trying them but there is no real migration path from mastodon and don’t really want to throw all my data away and start over.

Mastodon is currently more resource friendly than rebased, unfortunately, although improvements on the latter with regard to memory use are apparently in the works. Vanilla stable branch Pleroma is your best bet in a more limited resource environment

What do you know about Hubzilla? This is my favorite platform, but there are still a lot of "connectors". I have two instances right now, and I am going to install a Frendica instance next to connect and test.I hope to install at least 2-3 nodes like diaspora*, Friendica, Soapbox FE in a few weeks and make them all talks to Hubzilla.

It works superb using Zot, but I am not so sure if the vision of "one ring to rule them all" provides the same function. The documentation is terrible, I just realized I have to do work in the sell to make something function in the Addon.I mean of course, splendid, thanks - but please make it more obvious.

@jeff @simon I notice that some people are running Pleroma on a Raspberry Pi, which looks inviting. I share your concern about migration though: although there seems to be an ActivityPub export format.

@james i followed you at the old account and am automatically following you here, if that helps. What's the cost of setting up your own?

@akurjata The auto-following for you worked: I needed to manually follow everyone again. My own server is rate-limiting me!This costs $15/month. It’s not ideal as a cost.

@james @akurjata It's a shame federation effectively means "install and run Mastodon". It's kind of a beast of a stack.A lighter-weight thing that seamlessly interacts with Mastodon, however - seems like a much more interesting idea.Or from existing platforms like tumblr: https://twitter.com/photomatt/status/1589665959337656322

@akurjata @james @js Having run my own Mastodon server years ago, I switched to Pleroma and never looked back. Also keeping an eye on GoTo Social but it’s still early days: https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial
