We hear this random slogan in the U.S. of "our freedoms." Being on the outside, I would like to know what some people think, what "freedoms" you have more so in the U.S. compared to other countries.I will compare to points here in Korea. I pay about $50 a year as PROPERTY TAX, which includes trash pickup, for my small 4-room place that I own. Property tax in the U.S.? Ha!True, GUNS are not here. But you don't see police unless they are needed and are called, and break-in crime is zilch.

@jessecoynelson The obvious one is free speech (1st amdmt), but this is eroding quickly but still is technically true.In the US we are allowed to read North Korean books while watching porn.In Thailand (my place) there are many things not talked about, e.g. 15 year jail sentence for saying someing negative about the king or even not objecting to something negative said about the king.

@jessecoynelson But yes, generally your sentiment is correct.

@jessecoynelson that's because it's a homogenous culture. We suffer this in America by tolerating other cultures that have invaded peaceful people

@jessecoynelson S. Korea is an exporter of high value goods. The US exports grain and semi-processed food, which are so efficiently produced only 1% of the population is needed to produce it. The growth industries in the US over the last 50 years have been IT, finance and entertainment, all of which requre relatively few workers to produce but generate outsized returns. These industries concentrate wealth in the investor class while not providing a way for working classes to get ahead.

@jessecoynelson They may not be that different but we don't want to lose them. I'm sure S. Korea has income tax so you still pay taxes. Income is more offensive to me. I don't mind paying local property taxes and having upkeep of my roads, etc. We have real estate tax and car tax. The whole total was $3.5K. Income tax to the federal government to pay for the IRS, EPA, a war in Ukraine I don't believe in, just makes me mad.

@jessecoynelsonI don't want to leave. It is my country, I love it, and I want to fight for it. There isn't a country more aligned with my values. I'm losing my country to the crazy people I lvie amongst. Who have a "Hate doesn't live here" flag in their yard while living in a homgenous neighborhood of upper-middle class whites who think the same and vote the same.

@anneofgrayrock Yeah, with taxes... if you're in a country and you see the taxes at work, that's one thing. But more and more in the U.S., over time, it became less and less going back to the people. There is an income tax that I pay into. It's part of my retirement pension, for which I'm eligible if I work 20 years here. But if a foreigner leaves, they get that money back.

@anneofgrayrock I can understand your sentiment. I just never had that strong pull toward a country. As for Korea, if I were Korean, I might not like living here as much. They have a social order where age is very important. If someone is a year older than you, it makes a difference. As a foreigner, I'm outside that system.

@Dameatomicginger Who wants them? U.S. government? Sure. But I'll give you another reason why guns are not so important in Korea, besides the much lower crime rate... every Korean man knows how to use one. Because they did military service. When Koreans protest, they often get things done.

@jessecoynelson @Dameatomicginger Indeed, I'd love to see the US military transformed into a Swiss style militia system, where everyone is required to participate in highly distrubuted military groups, keep and know how to use their rifles.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Armed_Forces

In the US if you even bring up the idea of a militia you're put on a terrorist watchlist, along with all the "sons of the south" rednecks and ol' Cooter the moonshiner.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Armed_Forces
