@Gargron and all the top #Mastdodon instances need to start preparing for the idea that Twitter itself is on a relative fast route to bankruptcy. đź’Ł Need Mid-term plans for how the top instances can scale dramatically on hardware, stat. And streamlined onboarding of new users choosing instances to spread the user load.As a community NOW we need to encourage everyone who is thinking about it to start their own instance. @tchambers I’ve thought of starting my own instance, I just wish it was a run-one-script situation, but instead it seems like pretty typical sysadmin stuff, treating the instance like a pet. Stand it up, baby it, and hope nothing catastrophic happens.

@tchambers IMO, making the effort it takes to stand up decrntralized, “user-run” infrastructure like this is one of the biggest things keeping the indieweb from going mainstream.

@profcarroll @priryo @tchambers @Gargron @atomicpoet @leolaporte @elipariser I'm not sure pre-blocking is necessary if you encourage your users to report and make sure to follow up on reports assiduously. I only block a handful of instances. Am I wrong? Am I about to face an onslaught of harassment? I've been hosting this instance for three years, but I admit what's happened this past week is entirely new and different. So far the battlements are holding, however.

There will be growing pains and a big part of this will be user confusion in finding the “right” server. Some people will love that problem, but other people likely don’t care and would prefer consistency.

What would be better IMO is continued improvement in the installation and administration processes to make it easier for people to stand up their own instances. This is already happening, but there is always room for more people to get involved. Also Mastodon is not the only (or even best) software for interacting with the fediverse so spreading knowledge about other options would be good too. Photographers and artists may prefer something like pixelfed for example which is more reminiscent of instagram than it is twitter, and people on Mastodon (Pleroma, Misskey, or any other microblogging style server) could still follow them, and they could follow back, but the interface and application features may be more aligned with their needs. People who produce video content could look for peertube instances to join, and people who make music could go to FunkWhale. There is a lot of good federated software out there, and fixing your eyes on Mastodon as a standard is missing some of the great things offered by the other software options.
