@stux To all the admins out there, you are doing an incredible job shouldering an unprecedented burden. I believe we can build this network. We need to help users understand that in a distributed network, it is not be best strategy for everyone to pile onto the biggest server. I think of it as life boats. People survive by putting a few people in each boat, not by overloading one boat (which sinks) and leaving the rest half full.

@Are0h Time and time again, however well intentioned databases may be, they have been weaponized agains the very people you seek to protect. Think about Hoover’s list of Communists, Nixon’s enemies list, the no-fly list, the Muslim ban. I don’t assume that the people in charge of “the list” will be any less prone to finding diversity “subversive” and seek to crush it. In fact, people administering such a list need not be malevolent, just clueless.

@Are0h Hey, I am another old white man living in the bubble, so I am open to a better solution. My perspective is that the strength of the #Fediverse is a lack of central control — although maybe there should be more diversity among the developers. (I do not know enough.)

@Are0h Good point, but maybe it is telling that all the lists that come to mind are made by bad people with bad intentions. Centralized censorship has also never really worked out, and the censors always claim that they are acting in the public interest. (So have all the people who made all those lists.) Just my point of view, but I think centralization is the problem, not the solution. Who do you want to decide what you read?

@Are0h My understanding is that the point to the design it to allow people to create their own communities and protect themselves, although I think tech is never enough if we do not embrace a culture of respect. Just my thoughts, but I welcome yours.

@Are0h P.S. I read your plan for Fipamo on your site. I totally agree with better access. The limitation on blogs, of course, is that they are not very interactive.

@intheicecreamvan Thanks. I will not make that mistake again. First, I do not want to waste the time of other admins, and I apologize for wasting yours. Second, I now know some admins, and you in particular, will make reports public and incite exactly the kind of conflict between users they were supposed to avoid.

@intheicecreamvan I objected to a post by a self-described warrior against pedophilia and “sexual deviancy,” whose profile includes Nazi references, after he jumped in and mocked, in moderately crude terms, a black man who had asked to end our conversation. I had already unintentionally offended the gentleman. I do not need that kind of “help.” It is your business what you do with reports; I hope people understand you publish them.

@intheicecreamvan @Leyonhjelm My apologies, but I have tuned out Mr. L. As for the rest of you, you may not have noticed, but I am not quaking in my boots. Good manners cost nothing. Sorry to have bothered you.

@Gargron @profcarroll @priryo @tchambers @leo @leolaporte @elipariser @atomicpoet Maybe having the education out there would be good not only for those of you out there doing the heavy lifting (with my gratitude) but also those of us who just jumped in and decided to build a personal instance.

@louis A “random person who just wants to use something that is not Twitter” will neither have sufficient interest nor want to invest sufficient effort to join Mastodon. The platform does in some ways self-select. Maybe that is a feature not a bug.

@louis The Waking Up app has an interesting discussion on procrastination as an issue of emotional self-regulation. Basically, your present self deceives itself into thinking you will want to do tomorrow what you do not want to do today. “Procrastination is a voluntary choice to delay doing something even though you know it is not in your best interest to do so.” I am ambivalent about Sam Harris, but his app is interesting. https://dynamic.wakingup.com/pack/PK0AA14?source=content%20share&share_id=AF791AE4&code=SC26FB456

@vees @00Aaron You are kidding, right? I hope? Teams is just another example of poorly engineered, proprietary bloatware that tries to do everything and does nothing well. Yes, email is laughably insecure, but there is a reason it is still omnipresent. And God save us from a dystopian world where we are all required to use Teams.
