All in all I'm thrilled to see the fediverse go mainstream, despite the growing pains it's creating for instance admins and veterans. But it's true that we have lost something in the process and I think Hugh articulates it beautifully here:https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/#fediverse

"There's another, smaller group of people mourning a social media experience that was destroyed this week — the people who were active on Mastodon and the broader fediverse prior to November 2022. The nightclub has a new brash owner, and the dancefloor has emptied. People are pouring in to the quiet houseparty around the corner, cocktails still in hand, demanding that the music be turned up, walking mud into the carpet, and yelling over the top of the quiet conversation."

I don't agree with everything Hugh says here. There have been genuine disagreements among veterans for years about whether Public posts are legitimately in the public domain. Also about whether some potential features are really that threatening to survivors of harassment, given the mod tools available now. But he's right that the 'verse has changed forever, in a way that people who were online in the early 90s might recognize.

@strypey I remember when it was polite to ask people even before posting a link to them, back in the early days. Times change. hugh is definitely correct that Twitter encouraged this kind of very aggressive, near-pugilistic culture which was definitely unhealthy.

@strypey I have, for example, startedd seeing a lot of posts here which are essentially: 'well, here's an exceptionally shit take." That is very Twitter.

@strypey I guess we’re all a little anxious that the existing cultures that make this place the diverse place it is will be pushed aside by a more homogeneous one with a big influx of people with a similar, but different, experience elsewhere. I also liked a lot of what Hugh said.

@strypey this is an excellent explanation of the situation from all sides. For the last couple of years the Fediverse has felt like a refuge from the toxicity of T. While it is great to see some friends arrive here it comes with some trepidation.

@strypey tbh this “They've been taught to behave in certain ways. To chase likes and retweets/boosts. To promote themselves. To perform.” struck struck me as patronising; in the most part people find a vibe that works for them - possibly Twitter selects for “textual extroverts”. But if you start from a premise that some group of people are behaving inauthentically but you are not it is unlikely to connect with them. 1/2

@strypey thanks for that. Certainly a lot to think about.I did start collating NZ journalists that had who they write for in their bio. Mostly cos I was wanting to follow them and was doing the work of looking for them on here so was just hoping to save others the work. Having just now figured out DMs I am asking new ones if they want to be included. Not sure if they'll get the DMs though if they're new and haven't figured out DMs yet.

@strypey not sure whether to reply as I'm inserting myself into the convo, but at the very least the reminder to not bring across the toxicity of Twitter into here is a good. Good thoughts.

@rjme @strypey I dunno, I don’t think that line was patronising. I think it’s an accurate observation. The thing that so many people are not getting is this bit: “If the people who built the fediverse generally sought to protect users, corporate platforms like Twitter seek to control their users”.The big question is how it will all shake out in the end, and only time will answer that one.

@HappyRumbletum @strypey But there is also the implication that the users were in fact “controlled”. Facebook is far more top down but Twitter has huge scope to shape your own experience of the platform. I get the “there goes the neighbourhood” (I was on Usenet for the Green Card debacle, when it comes to that, and Eternal September) thing but it reeks of smug, however unintentionally.

@rjme @HappyRumbletum @strypey We need to be careful of our own baggage in assessing whether someone is being smug. I don't think it is smug to accurately describe something. And Twitter DOES control what you see, algorithmically, and therefore how you respond, to a large degree. Like most corporate media, it thrives on outrage. And Musk is exposing that more than ever before. Individuals may behave differently, but how the mass of users behave is statistically predictable AND manipulable. 1/2

@rjme @HappyRumbletum @strypey I also was on Usenet for Green Card and Endless September. Hell, I was on BBSs. Mastodon has felt to me like coming home in a big way. But a lot of Twitter users never had that experience. They've only known corporate media and the aggression that it inspires. I've watched people I enjoyed interacting with on Twitter acting very badly in this new house and it surprised me. I think Hugh is completely on the money. 2/2

@nzlemming @HappyRumbletum Guess smug is largely (and legitimately) in the eye of the beholder. But NZ Twitter has a very similar vibe to Usenet s.c.n-z back in the day, for me.

@rjmeI think kiwis are a special case. I've yet to come across behavior among #NZTwits that I'd consider typical of Algorithm Overexposure Syndrome ;) In fact, this influx has in general been much better behaved than previous waves of Titter refugees. But I've definitely seen the kind of 'pistols at dawn' attitudes Hugh is talking about, and that's not been typical of the culture here.@nzlemming @HappyRumbletum

@strypey @nzlemming @HappyRumbletum maybe. Astrophysics Twitter is largely productive, too, IMO. (Interestingly mastodon.nz is apparently seeing a bigger influx than its .Au equivalent, so perhaps there is a “community” vibe here). But i think the locals also had some pretty robust engagement :-)

@strypey I’ve been watching this develop and am coming to suspect that everyone may ultimately be happier if the people dipping their toe in this pond eventually move to other instances (some of the comments about journalists in particular struck me as unfortunate) but sometimes the gods will curse us by granting our prayers, and that is perhaps unavoidably the case for people who have long advocated a retreat from corporate social media right now.

@rjme People moving between instances isn't a big deal. Unless they move to a trigger happy instance that think everyone is a nazi until proven otherwise, as that will cut them off from the majority of the 'verse. This is better for us of course, as these blocks protect the rest of from loud, self-righteous asshats. But sad for anyone who joins them without realizing the situation.

@DrAli> asking new ones if they want to be included.I strongly recommend not putting anyone on lists you share until you have their explicit consent. Journalists are less likely to be bothered than anyone else, especially if they're outing themselves in their bio, but it's just good practice.> Not sure if they'll get the DMs thoughDirect posts will come up in their notifications like any other @mention .

@Sorifith> inserting myself into the convoThis is another one that people legitimately have different views on, and have for years. My take is that the 'verse is like a conference or a festival, most of us are happy to meet new people and have them join our little huddle, as long as they're friendly and respectful. Those who just want to chat with their friends have many tools at their disposal; Followers-only and Direct posts, Mute/Block, choosing instances that federate selectively, etc.
