Fellow art mastodons. What are your thoughts on wacom mobilestudio alternatives? I have an old wacom mobilestudio that is literally held together with duct tape and I'm thinking of getting a new one. I've always been pretty happy with my wacom products, but my biggest gripes with the portable devices has always been noise and heat.

@simonstalenhag Are you including iPads among the alternatives? Because if so the drawing experience on iPads is superior to Wacoms.

Thanks for all the replies so far! I should add: It must be able to run normal desktop Photoshop, ideally on windows. I have an ipad pro and procreate, great for sketching but there's just no way I can do any actual work stuff or big image rendering on it. Also, a huge part of my workflow is photography-> raw photo editing and subsequent photobashing - so SD card reader is almost a must!

@simonstalenhag I was just wondering where did you study art fundamentals back then. Has this been told back when someone interviewed you?

@AleF2050 I'm not quite sure I understand the question in context with the above post.

@AleF2050 Well, first I thought it was in reply to my post about the Ripple Dot Zero post, where I said I really got to practice fundamentals when doing all the pixel art for that game. But the truth is more layered I guess - I started painting traditionally as a kid and kind of had to learn it by trial and error with gouache and watercolors. Another really formative experience was transitioning to digital and hanging out on the conceptart.org forums in the mid 00s.

@simonstalenhag I'm trying to start my roots on New Masters Academy so i would be able to learn art properly as a selftaught. However, i don't know if i could manage to get motivated to learn painting traditionally since i prefer to spend money on drawing materials than painting... so, for you, is it just fine to learn digital painting if you didn't matter about not doing traditional painting in general?

@AleF2050 I don't at all think traditional is necessary when learning art. I did it because that was what was available to me as a kid in the 90s. Had I been born in 2004 I'm pretty sure I would be all digital. Fundamentals is good but also not necessary to learn formally - I didn't. To me it has always been important to remember that improvement should be a side effect of free and joyful creative exploration, not the other way around.
