       Why dark mode causes more accessibility issues than it solves - H Locke: https://scribe.rip/@h_locke/dark-mode-accessibility-d2f8359bb46a (Medium via Scribe)I have to say, I've got a small but definate preference for lightmode. Though I do get tempted to go darkmode when I want branding that reminds me of the cinema!Virtual Reality Accessibility: 11 Things We Learned from Blind Users - Equal Entry: https://equalentry.com/virtual-reality-accessibility-things-learned-from-blind-users/

       @alcinnz I'm astigmatic and need glasses all the time and find dark mode highly preferable to light mode.

       @alcinnz I strongly prefer dark, but my view overall is that developers should feel obligated to support prefers-color-scheme in their CSS, and respect our system or browser wide settings.

       @ocdtrekkie @alcinnz Apple has a realyl good guideline about dark schemeTL;DR: honour user choicehttps://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/foundations/dark-modeI'm usually leaning on the dark theme unless I'm in a bright environment, then I'm switching to light themeI'm also reading books or big fatass specs/documentation in light theme to improve my focus

       @lanodan @alcinnz Without CSS (or a server side feature of some sort), you can't respect users' preferences on dark and light mode!

       @ocdtrekkie @alcinnz There’s <meta name="supported-color-schemes" content="dark light"> to advertise to the browser that it can switch to it’s dark-mode stylesheet, that’s client-side as it’s HTML.And if you had bits of CSS that make it safe and want to opt into it easily there’s :root { color-scheme: light dark; }

       @lanodan @ocdtrekkie @alcinnz I know some sites are starting to detect whether someone is in dark or light mode, but I didn't know this was a thing. That's pretty cool. https://web.dev/color-scheme/

       @lanodan @alcinnz Does that use like a default dark mode stylesheet shipped with the browser or something?

       @alcinnz @lanodan I do too, but I think in moderation it is fine. Especially if limited enough you can inline it, which is how I often use it.

       @dcbaok @alcinnz I'm astigmatic and need glasses all the time and find light mode highly preferable to dark mode.If it's one thing my astigmatism has taught me, it's that specular sources of light (like headlights of on-coming cars or white characters on a dark background) just smear into speckled blurs no matter how hard I try to force my eye to focus.Light-mode themes are sufficiently bright enough that, like daylight, it causes my iris to contract enough that darker features are more easily seen.

       @vertigo @dcbaok @alcinnz also astigmatic, but I am also afflicted with floaters (via TBI)Light mode on anything just brings them horribly into focus, making working with screens impossible. Dark mode they aren’t anywhere near as impactful.Horses for courses, but the idea that there’s one solution for all is silly.

       @dgold @dcbaok @alcinnz I also suffer from floaters too. My eye doctor was deeply surprised when I went in for my last eye exam.I just wanted to offer a counterpoint, is all; like you, I believe a one-size-fits-all solution is irrational.

       @vertigo @dgold @dcbaok @alcinnz I've basically come to the conclusion that people should be able to render text how they want. That epub is amazing and PDF is evil.

       @az @vertigo @dgold @dcbaok @alcinnz Why am I getting flashbacks from the old web markup-and-presentation discussions?CSS is evil, let the users decide, to view this page you need x.y.z version of such browser...Nothing new under the sun, I guess :blobshrug:

       @alcinnz solarised light ftw. Gnome showcased in gnome-text-editor, replacement for Gedit, how good that theme really is.

       @Mek101 There's people who need it and can't understand how others can stand light mode.Really different people have different experiences here, and its a good option to have.

       @Mek101 @alcinnz it can help to check out gnome-text-editor and "background-pattern" configured to show "grid". It will show subtle grid in the editor background, it greatly helped me and i am more than sad that i cannot find that same functionality in other text editors (codium, nano).P.s. this grid is available in Gedit too
