Something that always bothered me is that there's functionally no difference between "explaining why something happened" and "making excuses".

@vivernu@springbo.cc There is a nuanced difference. You can explain why something happened and it doesn't have to be an excuse. An excuse is an implicit request for forgiveness or avoidance of responsibility.

@kino@fedi.intkos.link I find there's no difference most of the time.

@vivernu On the Internet? Absolutely not. The nuance is lost once people can't listen/see tonal inflection and facial reactions. And due to our reliance on machines, we've slowly turned ourselves into extremes- Unable to process anything that isn't apart of our personal overton window. (At least we're doing better than pic related.)

@vivernu the functional difference between an explanation and an excuse is supposed to be the intent and emotion attached, the difference in real time is usually just however the listener perceives it

@doorroo@mirr0r.city I understand that but that implies mindreading half the time.

@vivernu it could, that's sort of why we have counsel and jury, multiple perspectives to 'read' your reasoning and determine if you had a valid explanation that exonerates you or if you're just trying to justify wrongs

@vivernu @vivernu It depends on how you do it. The original meaning of "apology" was "explanation". You can explain something while apologising or you can do it while minimising your behaviour.
