I've been thinking about how to create public timelines on particular themes. For example, a timeline of public posts by people who live in Aotearoa, or who teach at a university, or who play team sports. The goal would be to give people another way to filter the firehose of the #fediverse for posts relevant to them, and find new people to follow. Helpful for newbies, and particularly those on smaller instances, with a limited view of the 'verse.

A few of the design requirements, to explain why Gup.pe doesn't fit the bill.:* features only Public posts, not Unlisted or Followers-Only (or DMs obviously)* requires permission from a person to add their account to a timeline* gives people a simple, quick way to remove their account from a timeline* requires no ongoing effort by people featured on the timeline* independent of instances, like gup.pe groups are

@strypey Sounds like an alternative way of providing the same benefit the people turn to Facebook groups for.

@strypey I was a bit frustrated when I found out that Mastodon lists only worked for people you already follow - my primary use for them on Twitter was themes of folks I didn't follow, but I occasionally wanted to gulp down that theme. So I like your idea!As a direction that may be part of the way there - what you describe could be partly covered by a 'read only' view of an account's timeline. You set up an account, follow the folks you want, then that timeline becomes the 'list'.

@strypey An excellent proposal! I am trying to get my head around as to how that might look like. So a 'tab' titled, 'interest' will list all relevant posts? I was looking for #cricket this evening. It varies from instance to instance, e.g., if you search for #cricket here, you will get one set of results, but if you search in say mastodon.social, a different set of results.
