Starting to slowly switch from watching primary YouTube (on #NewPipe) to primarily watching @tilvids (a @peertube instance), also on NewPipe (because it's honestly just the best FOSS internet video player out there right now).

@RL_Dane I just wanted to reply to your toot to thank you for introducing me to #NewPipe, can't believe I've never seen it before.Download video/audio, play with the screen off, fast-forward during silences, up to 3x speed, no ads... damn, how did I miss this? 😀 Thanks for the recommendation!

@Psyklax Awesome! Glad you're enjoying it.It's such a good Youtube alternative. Not so much for endless vegging (dear God, youtube shorts has me in zombie mode for HOURS sometimes!), but for really meaningful content.

@RL_Dane Here's the thing: I HATE shorts! 😆 I go to YouTube for 20 minute, well-crafted content, not some TikTok ripoff (I don't use TikTok either, unsurprisingly). NewPipe therefore does the trick nicely for me.I think one reason I hate shorts/TikTok is that I can judge a video on YT by the thumbnail and title, and decide if I want the algorithm to include it in my watch history. With shorts, you have no choice: you just watch everything. Ugh. 😞

@Psyklax I kinda hate vertical video in general, and I really hate how shorts are presented on the youtube app and website, but shorts via #NewPipe is tolerable, and sometimes enjoyable. ;)

@RL_Dane I thought you meant that shorts don't play on it... because I can't see them. If I search for a specific short then it'll play, but when I look through a channel's video list, or through my subs, the shorts aren't there.I don't mind watching shorts from my subs, but where are they? I've searched online and nobody seems to have this issue, and I've checked every setting. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? 😕

@Psyklax @RL_Dane This is recent breakage. The fix NewPipe put in to get channel listings working again also caused the shorts to disappear from those lists.

@tulpa @Psyklax Ahhhh.The chaotic life of a web scraper. ;)Love #NewPipe, though. I even use it for #PeerTube / @tilvids, because it has the groovy screen brightness and volume controls right on the screen, like VLC.

@RL_Dane @tulpa @Psyklax @tilvids yeah, I love them and use them both, I often have a crappy Internet connection and download my videos in batches before I watch them, that way it's no buffering or losing my connection in the middle of a video :)

@RL_Dane @tulpa @Psyklax @tilvids Well, it's decent mostly, I just don't feel like paying for it :p so I use the one in my apartment which I paid like 15 eur for some years ago, mostly good but spotty some times and I have good net at work, other than that I get by without mostly, don't need Internet when I'm doing other stuff :)
