Mastodon makes that funny little bloop noise when you get a notification. Pleroma is silent, but uses desktop notifications instead. I find both to work about equally well.

Let's talk about security! Give me your advice to improve my #security posture.The threat model here is remote. Web sites and other things that connect out to the internet and receive untrusted input.I'm avoiding Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, and Google. (I still use Amazon.)I keep my data locally where possible and use #Syncthing to keep copies on my desktop and phone.I use strong unique passwords everywhere and keep them in #KeepassXC. I don't use 2FA because I think it adds more risk than value for me (see my recent posts for that essay).My desktop runs #Fedora 37 with #Firefox. I have #DoH enabled with #Adguard as the provider. #uBlockOrigin and #NoScript are loaded.My phone runs #GrapheneOS. DoT is enabled and again uses Adguard DNS. I use the bundled #Vanadium browser. The only thing I log into in that browser is this Pleroma account. I have 8 non-bundled apps installed, all from #fdroid. The only one that logs into anything is #Tutanota.Is there anything big I'm missing? Or even small things? Privacy stuff is in scope, but only if it impacts security.

@Azure @faoluin I have an HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw. This is one of the rebranded Samsung printers. It was a huge pain when I first got it; not only did it not want to print or scan without proprietary drivers, but it locked up regularly. After I updated the firmware, it became pretty great; no more crashes, and good IPPe and ESCL support that make it work out of the box on (mainstream) Linux.

Ok people, I know how to solve the massive influx problem:- People flee birdsite and come to Fedi- Instances fail under the load- Admins just let them fail for a while- New people get mad and leave- Instances start working again- We get to keep our good ol' Fedi- Profit

I'm starting to get the impression that more instances have defederated with Fosstodon than I would have expected. I always enjoyed my time there. I can think of about 2 sealions with accounts there who have ever bothered me.

Avoiding most of Big Tech has driven me into the arms of the one remaining, which is Amazon. There are things that become hard if I cut them out too. Effectively I use Amazon to avoid Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook.
