@bot @chudbere @RelayOne @dielan A combination of factors:1) There was significant controversy over an Android fediverse app not adding a hardcoded block for Gab to their app. I asked for, and received permission to, calmly explain to one of the participants an app developer should not be roped into moderating a potentially infinite number of servers by a potentially infinite amount of stakeholders' criteria (including the political party that person opposed, oppressive regimes, religious extremists, etc.)This person immediately began a months-long campaign to tell everyone who would listen that I'm a nazi and to report me to various international tribunals. A good portion of the network blocked me on one person's say-so. After literally months of slander, genuinely toxic behavior, and exposing their instance to liability, I screencap-quoted them, and, for the express purpose of returning the amount of disrespect I'd received, called them a guy. And all hell broke loose. This is actually why I'm b& from all of Eugene's flagship instances.... The guy wasn't even on one of those servers, and neither am I. But the performative mods had to make their big performative statement. 2) The same crowd dogpiled someone who made a fediverse search engine. This person received death threats, and a massive campaign was launched to get servers to suspend the site, which wasn't even a functional ActivityPub instance.... The crawler didn't rely on federation and could not be stopped by an instance suspension, so the act of suspending it was, again, purely performative and an act of virtue signalling. The project was cancelled. Canceldon cheered and celebrated, they had protected privacy for everyone on the fediverse! Now nobody can spy on people on the fediverse! Now we can be sure that if we block someone, they won't be able to see our public posts. They were sucking themselves off for "protecting vulnerable people" when they were, in fact, giving those vulnerable people a false sense of security, and setting up those vulnerable people to get hurt. A Real Actual Adversary, *especially* a surveillance apparatus, isn't going to fucking announce what they're doing. They're already doing it. To tell people that they can protect their privacy by threatening others is monstrous. To point out how ridiculous this was, and because I don't intimidate very easily, I announced that I was going to be making a crawler, too. I explicitly laid out all of the ways that it would scrape statuses, and how it could not be stopped by (a lack of) federation; you can only avoid getting scraped by not using the as:Public scope. A massive shitstorm followed. Even more instances preemptively suspended my instance. Again, this was done under the pretext of "preventing scraping", but in reality, it's a punitive measure, and it was intended as one. Blocking this domain in no way prevents scraping by a script running on a different machine, scraping public statuses. So to again point out how silly this is, I would, every so often, buy a 99 cent domain with a name like fedi-archive.xyz or archivefedifor.fun, make a user called ArchiveBot, write one status that said BEEP BOOP NOW ARCHIVING, and follow like 10 canceldon admins. Who would all freak out and say "oh my god, he's scraping again, he's putting people in danger! quick, everyone block it and spread awareness!" and that's where you get those pictures.
