So I didn't even know Epic bought bandcamp ... but I also don't understand what this person is protesting?! Wasn't EPIC the company that literally stood up to Apple due to their domination of in-app purchases? Like .. we're talking Epic here, not EA.

@djsumdog That happened in March? Had no idea. Epic was treated with suspicion because they got a dumptruck full of cash from Tencent and went around buying up exclusive rights to a bunch of games to kickstart their shitty store. I don't really pay attention to gamer shit so I have no idea how that turned out.

@djsumdog They're protesting because they memory-holed that happening. Epic aren't a 'good' company by any means, owned by Tencent and all, but I'd like to understand their own reasons.

@djsumdog Epic didn't spin the court case well at all. It appeared to the public as nothing more than billionaire corporation bitching about the profits of another billionaire corporation. Trying to get kids roped into the case with a fortnite skin was also pathetic

It's odd because only a multi-billion dollar company could take that stand; the cut to revenue wasn't trivial, even to Apple. Although I guess any small company could attempt to sue (and lose) but only Epic could bring the weight of a massive audience to bear ... didn't follow the case though. It's sad if they fucked it up. Although didn't the EU pass something that requires alternative payment in app stores by next year? or was it alternative app stores in general?

@djsumdog nah, fuck Epic. They could have brought suit while still keeping fortnite on the Apple store, but they planned out a whole PR campaign beforehand using their zoomer audience as soldiers to simp for their profits. They're greedy as all the rest

@lewdthewides @djsumdog I'm just gonna leave this here (if anyone is wondering how Epic can manage to bungle stuff like this so badly)

@djsumdog Epic owning Bandcamp means that the chance that music will stay DRM-free decreases as people forget that Epic didn't originally own Bandcamp. The value in the purchase for Epic are the comfortable customers and brand identity, so they can slowly implement anti-consumer policy changes without having to build something new from the ground up. That's pretty evil

huh ... I only buy from bandcamp because I download the FLACs ... I know they have a streaming app, but I wonder what percentage of people use it. Even if only 1/3 of people download the actual music, that's still enough that Epic couldn't implement DRM without losing a massive chunk of user base .. could be a way for Soundcloud to step up and get back into the spotlight again.

@djsumdog The problem is that we shouldn't have to rely on a service to stay sane and then switch to whatever is in vogue every ten odd years, which was what was great about Bandcamp. If you bought the music you could keep it and do whatever. When it was handed over to Epic the press letter advised users to download all the music they could just in case Epic swung the hammer on actually owning your media.
