After a second honeymoon here on Mastodon over the weekend, I can't begin to emphasize how jarring and disheartening it is clocking into the day job. Said day job (which I do love) includes managing Thunderbird's Twitter and Facebook accounts. Not even 5 messages in, and all I'm seeing is crap like "Thunderbird is garbage with all the updates" and "their devs suck ass." This has never happened on @thunderbird's Mastodon account. Not. Even. Once.

@killyourfm @thunderbird to be fair I see garbage thrown at Mozilla-related projects around here pretty often, it's just that either they keep it to themselves or the instances are blocked on your sidebut yeah, please know your work is helping out a very valuable project :blobcatheart:

@killyourfm @thunderbird ...It's probably because to get into mastodon you have to work your neurons a minimum (to understand the concept of fediverse and instances)...and in the process 90% of online bullies are skimmed. Too bad this also means you'll never get the same number of followers.

@killyourfm @thunderbird can't say I'm innocent with the Thunderbird hate, but not sure I ever really publically voiced it. Yet I AM still using it even after trying the popular alternatives I could find. Evolution came close, but the settings UI was more confusing and it couldn't infer my smtp server automagically. Also couldn't find a darkmode toggle, which Thunderbird has :)

@killyourfm @thunderbird I could imagine that this problem becomes worse if more people make the switch. On the other hand i don't think it will become as bad as on twitter because of instance owners doing a good job of moderating sources of bad behaviour.If they don't, their instance might be completely blocked. Algorithms don't favour engaging, emotional stuff.

@killyourfm @thunderbird why did I think that Thunderbird was dead. I've been a Firefox user since 2004 and so wanted Thunderbird to be the full-scale email program/calendar/contact manager that I could use. Did I miss something?

@lacouvee @thunderbird it's a long story, but at some point development stalled or slowed WAY down to basically maintenance releases. Then at some point Mozilla detached itself from Thunderbird. Donations dried up. The product and the brand simply didn't have any visibility. But around 2019 Ryan Sipes stepped in and gave it a massive shot in the arm. Ramped up donations, leading to the team more than doubling (I joined in May 2022). More details than that, but future is bright!

@killyourfm @thunderbird dinosaur - not in terms of age - although I am old, but in terms of how software programs have evolved. Sometimes it seems as if we are going backwards.
