For those of you thinking about or getting a start on running a Mastodon instance, you may want to bookmark and use @nova's useful instance blocklist. https://github.com/hachyderm/hack/blob/main/blocklist

@Chronotope @nova No, it's overly broad. It blocks benign instances like qoto alongside actually bad places.

@bonifartius @Chronotope @nova I'm not letting some random individual somewhere unilaterally decide for me who is a Good Boy and who is a Bad Boy based on their own fallible opinions and opaque criteria. 🙄

@dimi @Chronotope @nova it's not even the unilaterally decision but this blind trust into block lists where bigger is better.i have blocked some domains for my user. funnily enough those of the free speech critical instances, as you just can't discuss with those people. nobody from all the "evil" domains of that list gave me problems. the only times i was insulted was by users from woke instances.

@dimi @bonifartius @Chronotope @nova People who let randos decide that are probably not worth interacting with anyway

@dushman @bonifartius @dimi I mean... the whole point of selecting an instance is you are choosing an admin you trust to aid in moderation and exactly this sort of thing. I'm not sure personally why any particular server is on there, but if I didn't trust the admin of the servers I use to make a choice that benefits the vibe I want, I would move my account. That's the whole point of Federation! It's very weird to Get Mad on this. If you want to argue your particular instance's case, you can.

@Chronotope the point isn't that blocking as a tool is bad but weaponized blocklists are evil. servers end up on blocklists for fabricated reasons and then it gets cargo culted from there on. ffs, you can end up on these lists because you don't use the list.it's just evil shit tbh. hell, almost every free speech instance blocked on these lists have rules against doxing while the wokies pushing these list _love_ to dox their enemies.it's very clear to me who are the good guys, and it's not the list creators.@dushman @dimi

@dushman @bonifartius @dimi that said, personally I would not want to be on a server that has no moderation, or doesn't block off some of these sites that clearly, by name, have the sort of people who would do harassment, be obnoxious, or go around talking about head shapes. Doesn't sound fun!

@Chronotope @dushman @bonifartius I don't mind letting admin decide who or what to block. I am against them blindly outsourcing this task to strangers. The block list in question seems to at best be irresponsible, at worst toxic. So I'm glad I have a good admin who isn't using it—but I am disappointed that users of other, less discerning instances, will now be deprived unnecessarily of possibly meaningful connections because of the capricious whims of randoms.

@dimi @Chronotope @bonifartius Yeah I agree. My point was that blocking instances should be a conscious decision. Blind trust in people who make those blocklists is counterproductive.

@Chronotope @bonifartius @dimi Don't get me wrong I'm not for absolutely zero moderation. Again, I just think blocking an instance should be the conscious decision of an admin. The people who publish those blocklists tend to be overzealous and often often add instances for very benign reasons.

@Chronotope @bonifartius @dimi Plus you can block whole instances on the user level anyway. You don't always need admins to babysit you. Or is that not a thing on mastodon? I haven't used it in ages.

@dushman @bonifartius @dimi that's cool, that's why you're on one instance and other people are on others. Some *do* want that, and the spirit of Federation is to create tools that let people do both. There are tons of instances where most of the users personally know their admin even. Please don't assume how you want to use these tools is how everyone wants to, or how everyone *should*. The nice thing about this system unlike somewhere like the bird site is that you get to make a choice.

@Chronotope @bonifartius @dimi I just feel like isolating yourself from everyone you don't fully agree with kind of defeats the point of a free and open network. At the end of the day though, it is your call yeah.

@Chronotope @dushman @bonifartius @dimi You're not making much of a choice with blocklists tho.The more evolved forms end up listing a lot of instances with either>no reason>being pleroma based listed as a reason>not following the same blocklists listed as a reason>being single user instances listed as a reasonI'll give you that going though one of these lists and picking all the obvious very bad instances to start you own blocklist is a good move, but subscribing to it and letting it update is basically deciding that you don't want to bother with moderation and leaving it in the hands of paranoid circlejerkers.
