@robert @dustin Adding relays is a feature in the admin UI. The relay is just a group of instances. In adding yourself to that group, it shares all content between listed instances.Go here: https://ossum.net/admin/relaysAdd this address: https://relay.berserker.town/inboxThere are other relays. But you can try this one for starters.

@dustin I couldn’t stay away. I had to set up an instance for myself. At least it is… ossum!

@robert My best advice is to not run it at all. It's typical of most Ruby on Rails stuff in that it's overengineered and consumes resources like a virus. I run all sorts of things on my server, and Mastodon uses more resources than everything else on my server put together. I've tried migrating to Pleroma a few times but haven't quite got it to work without starting over from scratch.

@robert But the biggest problem Mastodon has in my opinion when it comes to long term use is that there's no way to cull header images and avatars of people your server have federated with but haven't ever seen again, and the official solution is quite literally "lol buy more S3". I wrote some hacky shit a few instances use now to mitigate the problem. Without it within a few months it'll eat up gigabytes of space just in images.

@robert https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/9567#issuecomment-807361019It's a hackjob but it does what it needs to.

@dustin Cool, thanks! It's very manageable right now, but I'll need to see how it fares over time. How much resources does your Mastodon instance hog now?

@robert About 2.5GB of RAM if you count redis (Mastodon is the only thing on my server that uses it) and its postgres usage. Storage is still significant but not like it was before I wrote a script to cull the images. I don't really have that active of an instance, but it does federate with a good bit of places these days because I've been around a while.

@dustin After seeing how it nommed 1GB disk space in 12 hours, I start fearing for my 180 GB attributed to it. I may need a bigger boat.

@robert You can mitigate it by regularly culling images, but yeah it's gone up lately for me too lol

@matt @dustin Haha! I looked into them at some point, and again now — and they’re temporarily unable to take on new customers. I guess Twitter boosted their business model, huh? 🥲

@robert @dustin It sure has. I’m surprised other web hosts haven’t started offering zero click installation Mastodon packages as they do with Wordpress installations.

@matt @dustin Haha! Looking at my own setup, it’s anything but “zero click”. 😅I do believe it could be standardized quite a bit, but still there are some parts that need to be manually prodded. 😬
