I think a lot of the FUD around Mastodon comes from people who have already decided to stay on Twitter and are convincing themselves that it's the right decision. But there's also a lot of truth to the onboarding being confusing.

"It's just like email" is true in a sense, but not for Mastodon itself. Email is the equivalent of the federated network that Mastodon is a part of. But Mastodon isn't like Gmail, it's like an open-source, self-hosted Gmail clone (hence the confusion for non-techies)

I don't know that Mastodon will gain critical mass as-is, but my hope is that a sort of "Gmail for the fediverse" comes along to help users for whom the different servers are too confusing. A single service with unified branding/onboarding that federates with Mastodon.

@VamptVo contrary to the entire point of the network

Mastodon itself isn't the real value of the federated network. The ideal that it's striving toward is a world in which all sorts of different services can talk to each other (not just different servers running the same Mastodon software).
