Only the truly enlightened understand that the worse a show's animation is the better it is, actually.

@sean Aqua Teen is also a perfect example. Genius writing and voice acting with dogshit animation that plays into the comedy.

I think a lot of the FUD around Mastodon comes from people who have already decided to stay on Twitter and are convincing themselves that it's the right decision. But there's also a lot of truth to the onboarding being confusing.

"It's just like email" is true in a sense, but not for Mastodon itself. Email is the equivalent of the federated network that Mastodon is a part of. But Mastodon isn't like Gmail, it's like an open-source, self-hosted Gmail clone (hence the confusion for non-techies)

I don't know that Mastodon will gain critical mass as-is, but my hope is that a sort of "Gmail for the fediverse" comes along to help users for whom the different servers are too confusing. A single service with unified branding/onboarding that federates with Mastodon.

Mastodon itself isn't the real value of the federated network. The ideal that it's striving toward is a world in which all sorts of different services can talk to each other (not just different servers running the same Mastodon software).

Mastodon/The Fediverse now has over 1 million monthly active users, approximately the same as Twitter's estimated active user count in 2008, when I joined. People forget that Twitter also started as a weird, confusing new thing.

@yatil There's no way this happens. Apple's policy is to make it as difficult as possible for non-iOS/Mac users to interact with their services, as a way to ensure iOS users never switch to another OS. What do they have to gain by giving iOS users the ability to switch to Android and keep their browser data?

I got a BlueSky account but it's mostly just popular Twitter accounts posting exactly like they did on Twitter. The best part of Mastodon is that it's developed its own weird posting style distinct from Twitter.

@stux Thank you for this. It's really frustrating to see the number of instances pre-emptively blocking an instance that represents a potentially huge moment for the Fediverse. A wait and see approach is totally reasonable and leaves room to act if Meta does anything that hurts your users.

@scirave @stux There's some reporting on the fact that they're facing increased regulatory scrutiny for monopoly power and their walled garden business model, so federation could just be a way of offering an excuse to regulators. I highly doubt scraping the Fediverse is a goal — the number of people on here is a rounding error for FB. Not worth spinning up a whole new product to get a few million new users in the system.

@scirave @stux Think about it: Instagram doesn't need to join the Fediverse to "get big." They have vastly more users in the Meta ecosystem than we have in the Fediverse.

@scirave @stux I think many folks on here are way overestimating the value that federation provides to Meta. The ONLY value they get is the fact that they can say "it's technically decentralized!" to fend off regulatory suspicion. If your server defederates that's not going to hurt them. A few hundred thousand users? Who cares? What defederation does is it weakens the case for Mastodon and strengthens the case for Meta. You're making it harder to follow Meta users without joining Meta.

@scirave @stux It's a numbers game. If Meta is on ActivityPub alongside a bunch of small communities and those communities defederate, Meta still outnumbers them so effectively Meta now has a monopoly on ActivityPub, and the other communities have effectively given up on providing any countervailing influence for Meta.

@stux I don't think you're going to get a very good sample on this since the people most mobilized to talk about it and answer polls are people opposed to federation with Meta.
