If you aren't on a Mastodon server and are annoyed by Mastodon's marketing, consider adding :mastodont: to your name or profile description as a form of protest

@volpeon Sorry I'm out of the loop, but what's going on with Mastodon's marketing and why are people annoyed/upset with it?

@SimplyTadpole@sunbeam.city Mastodon is often characterized as if it was the fediverse itself, or as if there were no other alternatives for microblogging on here. A prominent example is the well-known feditips account, which despite its name is extremely biased towards Mastodon and completely avoids talking about any servers that could threaten Mastodon's position as #1.This is frustrating for people like me who aren't using Mastodon.

@volpeon Thanks for explaining! I admit I actually had no idea there was a difference between Mastodon and the Fediverse, which I guess goes to show how insidious this is o_o

@nutsandbolts@kolektiva.social Alright, some quick basics about fedi that I hope are understandable:The fediverse is a network where people can put content online.Instances are a gateway for people to access the fediverse. The server type -- Mastodon is one -- determines what how you see the content on the fediverse and how you create your own. On a Pixelfed instance you would get a more Instagram-like experience, but you can still interact with Mastodon users and their content and vice versa. This is what makes fedi so amazing. The issue I have is that Mastodon is often portrayed as the whole fediverse or the only microblogging platform on the fediverse. This isn't true, though: My instance is a Misskey instance which gives me a microblogging experience as well, but it comes with some more features Mastodon doesn't have.Recent events have amplified Mastodon's mischaracterization and that's frustrating for people like me, who aren't using Mastodon.

@volpeon @nutsandboltsthere's thousands of servers (aka "instances"), all 100% independant from each other, that communicate with each other. all servers runs different software (pleroma, mastodon, peertube, whatever).all are connected in mostly the same way.new connections are formed via interactions through third parties. So Server A know B, B knows C, but A doesnt know C. Now USER-B1 from B retweets a post originally from C. User-A1, who follows B1, receives the retweet. Now Server A knows about Server C and vice versa.Server C hates server A, so they will block themselves from interacting with A, severing the connection. After some time, the result is something like first pic related. If you scale this picture up to 10000s of instances in the little blue bubble, then you get a fairly realistic depiction of the fediverse. The 2nd pic related is a list of all fediverse software (if its not there its GARBAAAAAAAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE), with a short description of "what can this software do well?"

@volpeon I believe it is always easier to start somewhere to ease people into the whole idea, then gradually expanding their horizons until they've figured it out naturally. I'd rather people know about Mastodon than not knowing about the fediverse at all. If they've figured out Mastodon, explaining the rest will be much easier than if they're overloaded with hundreds of applications in the first place.Should it have been Mastodon that introduced them? Now that's Debatable, but it has, and we should take that momentum for what it is and go with it until people are settled. So yes. It's unfair for people who're putting in their heart and soul into an alternative platform, but you can definitely reap the benefits of this whole thing as well. Work with it, not against it.Just my opinion.

@talon@dragonscave.space I don't think the core concept of fedi is difficult to explain or grasp, it's just that too many people on here get right into technicalities that new people don't need to know, and that's what makes them feel overwhelmed.Introducing people to the fediverse in terms of Mastodon has the adverse effect that they're locked into a mindset that this whole network is Mastodon which is hard to unlearn later on. Unlearning is always more difficult than learning, that's what makes this kind of marketing so harmful.

@volpeon @nutsandbolts To add to this, it gets even worse when governments or companies start hearing the mastodon marketing, because their reach is even greater. The EU is on the fediverse but all their communication about it highlights mastodon instead of the fediverse as a whole. So these larger organizations are trying to make a beneficial move, but just amplifying mastodon's overreach. Its especially a concern since a lot of these organization are giving mastodon grant money. Smaller projects don't see anywhere near the financial/engineering contributions that mastodon gets because mastodon has used this advertising method since it was founded.
