       Having been through many "collective butt clenches" over change at Twitter, I was sceptical that it would self destruct this time, either. However, Musk has put is mad ideas into overdrive.But... A LOT of the discourse being had about why Mastodon is better reveals that many (most?) people don't know what Twitter (of old) could be by using a third party app. Most of the bad was avoidable all along. That this place relies on "not behaving badly" is a concern.

       @zkarj yep. I've only been here a short time, but I'm already concerned that there is this sense of superiority creeping in.  As in, this place is better because we are better people (especially compared to Elon). I hope that calms down a bit else this will become just as dysfunctional as twitter, but without the good bits of content.

       @zkarj I mean, what is the point of we just create a new toxic place where we express our superiority over others?Tools to curate our own expertise might be useful.  Have yet to see what, if anything,  is available on here.

       @flyinggeek exactly. What ruins social networks is how many people are in them. I worry that this platform only makes sense as a lifeboat and not a form of transport.

       @zkarj but also, what makes them great is the large number of people using them.Eg. I don't see mastodon replacing aviation twitter any time soon...

       @flyinggeekAt the moment all the noise of newbies arriving, finding their friends, and setting up camp is drowning out the music. But there's been some great music playing at this festival for a long time before Melon Usk even thought about buying a datafarm. Copious use of hashtags is a good way to find all the stuff going on that's not meta about the fediverse itself, and the places people have come here from.@zkarj

       @strypey @flyinggeek I don’t follow “aviation”. I follow many people who are in the aviation sector. Like real world social networks, I found all of them through networking, not through standing in a large room and listening into conversations.I am fairly sure I can trace my entire follow list to one person and I probably found that person through someone else who is not an avgeek.
