Ahhh ok. So hashtags can be viewed across servers. I see why they are so important on Mastodon now. It’s a bridge between “local” (only people on the same Mastodon server as you) and “federated” (the whole world (almost)). Eg #NZTwits (or #NZTwit) is a way to find NZ twitter users to follow no matter where they are on Mastodon. I have barely been using hashtags. Will do so more now. @JeffHowell theres no setup required ✌🏽1. If you want to search for an area of interest, use the search field in mastodon and have a guess at the hashtags e.g #science or #travel2. If you want others to find you and your toots on a subject, just type any hashtags into your toots as you write. Usually the mastodon client will show you popular options (see image attached), but you can type anything new too. After you post, those hashtags will become clickable links.

@JeffHowell @aotearoa_ben the search is optimised for hashtags in a way Twitter is less, and one of the important things is they can be searched across the wider world - it’s recommended to add some to your profile, and to pin hashtags that you find useful so that you can review them every now and then to find new people or ideas.

Welcome to the fediverse @JeffHowell !In the absence of algorithms to decide what we see, hashtags are one of the main ways to make stuff discoverable and to find stuff. Apparently most fedi apps offer ways to subscribe to tags, although that's a newer feature I haven't used much yet.@dznz @aotearoa_ben
