@JeffHowell theres no setup required ✌🏽1. If you want to search for an area of interest, use the search field in mastodon and have a guess at the hashtags e.g #science or #travel2. If you want others to find you and your toots on a subject, just type any hashtags into your toots as you write. Usually the mastodon client will show you popular options (see image attached), but you can type anything new too. After you post, those hashtags will become clickable links.

@zyk @publicaddress @JeremyWxBaker it’s tricky I reckon. Because sure NYTimes or Guardian can run their own instance, but it’s not really practical or affordable for The Spinoff and potentially even NZH or Stuff. Maybe an NZ-wide journo instance could work, but how do you fund it, and who decides who gets to sign up?

@strypey @lightweight @zyk @publicaddress @JeremyWxBaker with respect, The Spinoff runs on the smell of an oily rag that has been wrung out and left to evaporate for 30 days. And it's really not just about cost. Our "technology department" is me and one frontend engineer. I'm not keen on setting up additional services that come with maintenance overhead to leave for the next person that comes along.

@BigD step one: if you're on the web, enable the "advanced web interface" step two: the "Local timeline" is everyone on this server, you can just read and reply there if you want.step three: click on people you recognise and use their follow lists to find people.step four: post some hashtags about stuff you're interested in e.g. #music and also search those hashtags to find people with similar interests.

You’d have to presume that Elon has at minimum several hundred million in investments unrelated to SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter, so he can absolutely run all of them into the ground and still be fucking obscenely rich.There’s no way to compare it to something we can relate to.
