Hello, I am a very real journalist from The Washington Post, and am confused by what I am seeing. Many users have noticed Mastodon fails to exactly recreate the twitter experience, and the userbase is different.Would any of you like to contribute a "toot" for my story? Looking for comments that:- don't confuse me- don't confuse my audience- don't question my framing of anything- are not an image of a pig with feces on his testicles, I've already seen this several times

@unlofl Mastodon is not a twitter replacement, it never was supposed to be. Mastdon is a self hosted social network where when you setup a "server" (Instance), you are connected to everyone. This prevents someone (like elon musk) from taking it over, because he would have to buy every single instance, and I know I would never sell mine.

@realcaseyrollins I've read a bunch of the basics, but I'm looking for something more personal, nuanced, to show my PMC liberal readers the complexity of the issue and that twitter is just the best we can do, and that they shouldn't question their relationship with media, social or otherwise.Sure, Elon isn't great, but should they have to choose an "instance" (whatever that is) just to try something new? There are also serious vague privacy concerns, which I will refuse to elaborate on.

Haha no I’m not trolling at all!I can’t speak to everyone, but it seems to me that a journalistic perspective may say “hey, let me aggregate people’s experiences, and then summarize my takeaways from their experiences”. With of course, additional investigation if anything seems interesting and warrants looking into.But it seems to me that your approach here is to start by saying “this system is bad, let me find some more people to tell me that it’s bad, to include in my article saying that it’s bad”. If you’re so set on that narrative, you may as well write the article without any additional input IMHO.

@realcaseyrollins I'll definitely give this some thought. While I've taken the more direct route before, my editors insist I need at least a few sources. I think the twitter search feature was much better, since I could enter literally any opinion I wanted, and easily find a tweet with 2-3 likes from someone with a dozen followers and use that.Also, several people have accused me of "doing a bit," is this some sort of special mastodon slang that the kids are now using?

Which, I must say, is a thought that crossed my mind, as you present yourself as a #WashingtonPost journalist yet aren’t using your real name here, or on journa.host or mastodon.social, where most of the journalists have been joining. @Sir_Fromgar @unlofl @realcaseyrollins most media reporting these days sacked unprofitable Trade Journalists in favor of the highly profitable Professional Journalists. The bean counters only want people who deliver news the owners/advertisers want, in the cheapest and fastest way possible. Instead of thoughtfully ruminating on what the White House says and balancing a report, you repeat it, or spin it to be a lie if owners/advertisers won’t like the message.

@Lynda @BalooUriza to be clear, I have no affiliation with WaPoBut I hope you enjoy fedi, I don't think I've seen any major bot issues. A feature of fedi is that you sort of have "neighbors" on your instance who can see your posting, even if you don't directly interact. Spam and harassment tends to get noticed faster and reported, since its a bunch of little communities instead of one giant stream of posts.
