While watching in awe at the massive #TwitterMigration I can't help but wonder how to reach the equivalent for #PeerTube A huge part of what I've been doing at tilvids.com is trying to convince creators to take a chance on this platform. It's a real challenge because unlike moving from Twitter, you're asking them to disrupt their monetization. It's a big problem to figure out. The best thing you can do is contact creators, ask them to consider PeerTube, and support creators that make the jump.

@tilvids I'd argue that negative experiences with Youtube helps. Every time they screw with a creator's revenue; strike their channel; mess with their views; etc it breeds contempt. Creators shouldn't be relying on Youtube ad revenue anyway. Better they have a variety of donation options which already exist such as Liberapay; Open Collective; Ko-fi; BMAC; etc.

@tilvids If you're a popular YouTuber you have a chance by making a video over there, but if you're not, all you have left to use are comments. And I'm hesitant to put any links in there, because I am under the impression that they get killed by Google. So, it's already hard to contact people at all 😢

@tilvids Well... I don't have a YouTube channel, but I've sometimes wondered whether I should create one. I'm deafblind yet tech-savvy - I'm sure people would be interested in watching content about this.Main problem is that video-editing sounds daunting to me, to be honest. But if one day I feel like I have the time and energy to learn how to do video editing, I'll probably opt for Peertube instead of YouTube ^^

@tilvids (1/2)being a creator fed up with the way youtube put stupid ads with stupid people in stupid suits selling stupid ways to make stupid money in front all of my videos, I pulled the trigger and started migrating all my stuff to #peertube a few months ago. but in all honesty, the problem is: there's next to no feedback. videos that got me tens of thousands of impressions on yt receive 10 plays or so on peertube.

@tilvids peertube needs some method of monetization to attract content creators. They also need to make a living

@loveisgrief I get that. The thing is though, most creators don't make *that* much money off of ads. And by the time they do, they're already large enough to be sponsored, where they make more money anyway. At some point, I'd like to take on a few large sponsors for TILvids (and prominently display them as such on the site) and then give part of that to smaller creators, along with encouraging creators to get their own sponsors.

@tilvids I really don't like how peertube shares your IP to other peers by default. Feels like a large security and privacy issue. That's why I can't recommend it

@shipp I believe you can disable this (via turning off the bandwidth sharing) in your user settings, if I remember correctly.

@shipp This setting can be toggled:Help share videos being playedThe sharing system implies that some technical information about your system (such as a public IP address) can be sent to other peers, but greatly helps to reduce server load.

@tilvids I definitely see that as the biggest obstacle. You’re asking them to move to a Patreon/Librapay/Ko-Fi style model instead of monetizing ads. It’s scary when your living depends on it.This also applies to people leaving Twitter, more indirectly: some people’s livelihoods can depend on their social media reach.

@dgoldsmith This is where the fedi community can come in. Ultimately, the reason YT works is eyeballs. If enough from the fedi community refuse to watch YT videos, and massively support and promote #PeerTube then eventually creators will follow. The monetization will figure itself out over time, but not without the viewers.

@tilvids I do hope we can come up with a method of monetization that doesn't rely on sponsorship to make a living. Because that creates a very dominant relationship and also requires sponsors to be on the platforms to become aware of content creators. That means content creators have to go where the sponsors are, which is probably large, existing platforms.I believe in a peertube plugin to donate directly on peertube based on criteria like viewing time and or reactions (aka tips)

@loveisgrief @tilvids nobody makes money on the fediverse, there's no way to monetize it, go back to Twitter if you want to make money

@loveisgrief For sure this can be part of the mix. That said, I'm dubious it can be the *only* method for creators and communities can rely on, at least at-scale. There's no shortage of ways for people to donate to open-source projects, but most of the larger ones still have to rely on some form of corporate subsidization in order to scale up and survive.
