@tilvids @notjustbikesCan you add a paywall to peertube? Or say free access as a Patreon member of a certain level.

@Ombra @notjustbikes I'm sure that can probably be done somehow, but it's not built-in to PeerTube. You *can* have your videos be unlisted, so you could probably do an early-access thing for Patreon contributors or something.

@notjustbikes Totally understand that sentiment. I'm actually a video creator as well, and when I went to look at other platforms, I noped immediately out of Odysee and PeerTube for the same reason. That's actually why I started my own PeerTube instance, so I could curate the creators and *ONLY* focus on those creating quality edutainment content. If you're ever interested, would love to have you share your amazing videos over at tilvids.com!

@notjustbikes PeerTube also just enabled an auto-sync feature, which allows you to automatically pull your content over to a PeerTube instance without any work on your part, which has been SUPER helpful, considering how much overhead adding another platform is for creators! 😅

@notjustbikes I can as someone who's been following people arguing with @tilvids about their site's policies for ages, I'm coming around to their position. There's a lot of nasty stuff on the wider Peertube network. Locking down an instance then very cautiously making connections would be the way to do it if you ever did decide to.

@dave @notjustbikes Yup, didn't come to the position I did lightly. I didn't even initially start out to create an instance, just to share content outside of YT. But as a creator, I just DID NOT want my edutainment content showing up alongside some of the trash out there in the general ecosystem. Finally decided to start a curated instance as a way to help creators into the PeerTube ecosystem without having to worry about that.Talked about that quite a bit here:https://blog.tilvids.com/TILvids-Update-November-2022/

@notjustbikes @tilvids I’m kind of sad that peertube is in a rough state, save for your instance. Do you think it’s because it’s not as popular, or because it’s fundamentally more challenging to have good content on peertube vs mastodon? I think it’s probably a combination of both. I just wish there would be more than one instance worth using.

@gnuntoo @notjustbikes It's because most YT'ers aren't in the game just to make good content, they also want to be able to earn part/all of a living from it. At the end of the day, YT ads pay money and come with a huge audience for sponsors, PeerTube does not. So most of what gets put on PeerTube is what is cast-off from YT.That's why I run my instance differently. I want it to be a safe place for creators, where they can rise up and grow alongside others. I believe strongly in creators!

@notjustbikes @Ombra Trying hard to do this with tilvids. Some of the community is not thrilled that we don't federate to the broader PeerTube ecosystem, but this was a strategic decision on my part, based on my bad experience as a creator when I looked around the landscape. I'm incredibly careful about which creators we let in, so only quality edutainment content shows up on the site (which ironically is down at the moment due to our host having a service disruption) 😂

@Ombra @tilvids just for the record, I have absolutely no interest in PeerTube. I'm busy enough with Nebula and YouTube, and I don't want to manage another platform. Also, my experience with Nazis on Odysee made me want to avoid any platforms without strong moderation.

@notjustbikes @tilvids Odysee is awful. I signed up a while back and watched some of your videos on it. The comments were horrendous.

@Ombra @tilvids Yup, I wasn't very happy with my content being associated with blatant white supremacist comments. Open platforms need to address the problems of comment moderation, because platforms with "freedom" will always be abused by Nazis to suppress the speech of others.

@notjustbikes @Ombra Anyway, all that to say...I completely hear what you're saying, and you're not wrong at all. Above all, I believe so strongly that creators should have more control over where/how their content is hosted, so they're not at the whims of Google. That's my main mission for what I'm trying to build with tilvids because it's what I want as a video creator.

@notjustbikes @Ombra @tilvids …you could always consider federating Nebula to offload servers and make content directly shareable while still having strong moderation

@notjustbikes @Ombra @tilvids (obviously that’s a potentially expensive endeavour with no tangible benefit in the short term, so it’s more of a long term proposal for a bored engineer somewhere)

@notjustbikes @tilvids I agree. That's why when I heard Elon saying he wanted Twitter but with little/no moderation I thought of Odysee & 4Chan.The paradox of tolerance comes to mind:

@Ombra @notjustbikes It's very true, and actually amplified because the creators making this bad content get kicked off of YT and have nowhere to go...so they just go pollute these other, more "open" ecosystems. I didn't introduce curation because I necessarily wanted to, I did it because it was the only way to allow the community to grow in a healthy way.I just continue asking myself every day, what's the best way to grow this community in a healthy way? I base all my decisions on that.

@xerz @tilvids @notjustbikes PeerTube's mission is similar to Nebulas: Giving more control to content creators.I wonder is some kind of collaboration could happen...Are any of the #nebulatv people on Mastodon?

@Ombra @notjustbikes I considered joining Nebula, but ultimately there's too much centralization there. Certainly Nebula gives creators more voice in the direction of the platform than YT, ultimately it's still centralized under one entity.I very much plan to build TILvids with less centralization. That's why I'll encourage creators to eventually run their own instances and we'll all just federate together. TILvids will just be an entry point, not the gravitational center of the universe.
