Why has the fediverse not had (most of) these moderation problems? Because it's a public network, not a business. Also probably because so far the whole federated network hasn't had enough users to attract much attention from mainstream institutions (so far...).https://www.techdirt.com/2022/11/02/hey-elon-let-me-help-you-speed-run-the-content-moderation-learning-curve#fediverse #moderation #FreeSpeech

"Congratulations, you have completed the game…. Just kidding! It never ends. It only gets worse, and you will make mistakes, and people will get mad and personally blame you and insist that you are deliberately trying to 'censor' their brilliant ideas, and advertisers will get mad, and politicians will pressure you into doing their bidding, and the media will criticize every mistake. You own a social network. Isn’t it fun?"

@strypey Mastodon will also have 100 different approaches to moderation—given all the factors listed in that article 100 different approaches is certainly possible.Things will go wrong, but there won't exactly be a very clear entity to blame. Building a straw man narrative shouldn't be too hard, given that most people will not have any experience with Mastodon's federation... but the distributed nature of Mastodon means that there isn't a single target to go after.

@MarcAgreed. One thing I left out of my first post is that we don't depend on advertisers to pay our bills. I guess ad-funded instances could crop up, but I can't see why people would choose them or stay on them. They certainly wouldn't have to if they didn't like the effects of carrying ads on moderation policy.

@strypey Ads are a very low density means of monetization anyway.. first, ads could be exclusive to coops, worker coops, enterprising non profits, E2Cs, and other purpose legal entities or democratic entities, but then..I wonder if a commission sales model might make more sense? In other words, the instance shares exposure to different coops for free, gains a percent commission from resulting sales. The tech part is hard unless ther coops are just honest about referrals.

@strypey maybe the ratio of moderators to users is quite high for most* instances? about 1M users / 1K instances Means at least 1 mod / 1K users on average.* excluding mastodon.social

@bigblen True. I guess that's part of what I was hand-waving at with public network not a business. The second point was more about the lack of things like DMCA takedown demands. I've yet to hear of a fedi instance getting one.
