I don't think I've been as excited for the prospects of #mastodon and the #fedi in general as I have this week. I really REALLY hope the momentum doesn't die out in a month like it has during previous migrations.

Tho, I still have doubts. Some of the people I follow are still confused by Mastodon. A UX agency was hired to improve the sign up experience on the official app and it still falls flat. It doesn't have to be this confusing. Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail made email understandable to the average user.

I can suspect the language of Mastodon contributes to the confusion. We talk about Mastodon as if it’s a singular site: “I’m on Mastodon.” However, you don’t say, “I’m on email,” you say, “I have an email account on Gmail.”

@mrjunge @ilovecomputers Nah, I think it's a mistake to go to an even lower-level description. If we follow the email pattern, we consistently refer to the whole system using the name of the messages it sends: I have toots, do you have toots? (If you're worried about the fart joke potential, I guess you could attempt to xerox "tweets." But imo we go to toot with the nomenclature we have.)

@ilovecomputers This is the consequence of marketing the network but not the nodes. For every successful Exodus I've seen on the #Fediverse (including #Gab as well as #Spinster, #Poast, and mstdn.social), people were told "hey, there's this site you can go to that's better than #Twitter". Not a protocol.This is an unfortunate artifact of how @Gargron has designed #Mastodon, each instance more or less looks the same, there's no branding...they don't look distinguishable from each other so there's been little consideration of the benefits of proper branding.
