I keep getting tweets from politicnas popping up on my timeline like "vote to get two more dems into the senate and we can codify roe v. wade!" Am I stupid or did they not have some portion of the last 50 years to do that? Why is it that every election it's "vote for us or no more abortions!"

@GalacticTurtle One of the few differences between the two major parties is that one promises to ban abortions and the other promises to protect abortion access, but it's only the Republicans that actually keep their word.

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle I don't envy women in the US. You can choose between the party that will end legal access to abortion, or the party that will erase woman as a sex class.

@GrumpyOldNurse @GalacticTurtle This is why I'm skipping all the state and national candidate races. Neither Democrats nor Republicans have earned my vote.

@GalacticTurtle I guess the only counter-argument is that they really did think that the U.S. Constitution clearly protected abortion and that no further action was needed. Despite the Roe v. Wade decision, I don’t actually think the Constitution was clear enough for anyone to say, “Well, this is done!”, but if others thought so, then I guess that’s an answer. To those who see it as an issue already clearly addressed by the Constitution, there is no more need to codify it than there is to codify freedom of speech or of the press. The Founding Fathers already did it.

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle Then the choice should be clear. We need to avoid the mass death that would result from a national abortion ban.

@harpyharpyharpy @GalacticTurtle The Republicans will likely get that anyway since the Democrats will only finger waive, and women will also lose all our other sex-based rights thanks to the Democrats.

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle No. This isn’t a hypothetical. If the Republicans win, women will be catapulted back to the 1960s in the next two years. Do you think it will be easier for women to fight the creeping legal reforms from the TRAs while they are juggling forced offspring and the dependency on men for food and shelter that results?

@harpyharpyharpy @GalacticTurtle The Democrats use that threat to fundraise and get us to give in and vote for them while never actually doing anything to protect abortion or improve our lives. If the Democrats pass the Equality Act, women have no sex-based rights. There is one party, the Oligarchs, and they will always have abortion access and private changing rooms. They don't care about us. Working class and middle class women are on our own here.

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle If the Republicans win this election there will be a national abortion ban. The fact that the Democrats are slimes has nothing to do with that. An abortion ban would mean thousands of women dying horribly every single year. The Democrats will not pass an abortion ban. There’s a clear choice to be made here. It’s impossible to feel good about, but feeling good is a luxury. I don’t disagree about the oligarchs. The fact remains that we cannot afford an abortion ban. There are also many policy proposals that a Dem-majority legislature would institute that would be good for the country. Not so for the Republicans. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. The time for despair is not yet come. We have the tiniest of opportunities for women’s equality in this country to survive. We need to take that opportunity.

@harpyharpyharpy @GalacticTurtle "There are also many policy proposals that a Dem-majority legislature would institute that would be good for the country"Ha! Every time the Democrats have a majority or even a supermajority, whether in a state or nationally, they do nothing to actually help people. There's always an excuse. But the truth is, they don't want to pass progressive policies that benefit women or the non-elites because the status quo benefits them and their donors. The hope that maybe this time will be different, or at least they're not as bad as the other guy, makes voters stay in this abusive relationship where we are perpetually gaslighted and lied to, where our rights are eroded with every year and still we hold out hope that they'll change and maybe do something nice like they promised, we just need to work at it a little harder. It's sick. The system (relationship) is not fixable.

@Cousin_Isobel @GalacticTurtle American Spinsters can correct me on this, but I think it was pretty clear from the outset that the legal foundations of Roe v. Wade were pretty shaky. There were discussions way back in the 70s, IIRC.Re. the reluctance on the part of the Dems to codify this in law, I’ve detected a distinct hint of “Nice abortion rights you’ve got there… be a shame if anything happened to them (if you didn’t vote for us).”

@EmmyNoether @Cousin_Isobel This is what I have heard as well in the past few months. Though in day to day life, existing only since 1993, not a peep about it was mentioned! Makes me wonder what other laws have "shaky foundations."

@GalacticTurtle @EmmyNoether Every time I looked into it, the Constitutional grounds for barring states from making laws against abortion seemed tenuous to me, as well, but others insistently did not think so. 😂 Maybe I wasn’t hanging around with the smartest people. All the everyday Democrats and libfems I knew seemed to think Roe v. Wade was not just a nice favor for the Supreme Court to do for women, but actually a Constitutionally accurate decision.

@Cousin_Isobel @EmmyNoether Yeah but then it's like... who decided women could have bank accounts? Who decided anyone other than white men could vote? Who decided slavery wasn't a thing anymore? How many legal favors have been granted? 🙃

@GalacticTurtle @EmmyNoether I don’t know about the bank accounts! I’m sure the information is out there, but I don’t have it. I’m pretty sure financial institutions only want to stop people who are not elite progressives from having accounts these days, and I haven’t seen any of this discrimination challenged in court, so maybe having financial services isn’t a legal right?Slavery abolition and the right to vote regardless of race or sex is pretty clear in the Constitution, though. It’s the 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendments.

@GalacticTurtle @Cousin_Isobel @EmmyNoether None. All those rights were demanded. I can't get over how people have forgotten or never learned what it was like in the 70s when we were fighting the Centrists Dems over the same shit we're fighting them over today. “Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them.”― Assata Shakur

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle It is a massive failure of strategy to just concede the most fundamental right that women possess in order to stick it to a political party that is, as all political parties, corrupt. It’s just dumb. I won’t mince words. Again: I never said any of that stuff about how the Dems are good. The Republicans are worse. It’s insane that you’re focusing your critique not on the party that is actively working to disenfranchise you completely. You are going to lose the right to be Child Free. What part of “no exceptions for rape or incest” don’t you understand?

@harpyharpyharpy @GalacticTurtle What is more disenfranchising that erasing women completely? How can women have access to sex-based care if we have no sex class? The Oligarchs are working to erase all our rights, only giving the appearance that they are in opposition to each other or that we have a choice so that we continue to grant them our support. There is one party.

@Childfree @GalacticTurtle Forced pregnancy and forced dependency on men are more LITERALLY disenfranchising than semantic erasure. Even “erasing our sex class” (unlikely to actually happen in law) would be less harmful than precluding access to reproductive choice. In fact, the GREATEST DANGER implied by the semantic erasure of women would be the possibility of real-world consequences like an abortion ban!

@harpyharpyharpy @Childfree @GalacticTurtle If the Republicans win, our national ban will be international. Yes, the Ds have been less than enthusiastic, but they haven’t tried to make Kenyan doctors remove posters about domestic violence because the poster implies women have choices in life. There is difference between the parties, even if it’s the difference we prefer.
