Lots of [new] people on Mastodon are wetting themselves about "Verification" I suspect it's the blue tick Twitter syndrome? I think they need to understand what "Federated" is before they start worrying about "Is that actually you?"

@neildarlow Yeah, The worst of it is everyone is flocking to mastodon.social, so their bandwidth is going to be huge! This is because, as I said, most Twitter users do not understand how Federated works. They could join mastodon.deathtotheinfidelwest and they'd still be connected. 🤦♂️I can see some of these instance admins coming around with a cup "Spare some change guv'nor?"

@dick_turpin And that would only be fair. It's OK to run an instance from personal funds for a modest number of users but with a massive influx of people like we're now seeing you can't provide large amounts of resource and bandwidth for free.

@neildarlow Yeah. This is what makes me laugh about people who use services and stuff for free. They've used it for so long that it never occurred to them there is a cost involved. You watch; some of the smaller instances will have to shutdown registrations.

@radix023 Words are cheap and hosting costs money. I'd like to see someone pay their food bill at the supermarket with their opinions and the fact they turned up for half an hour. 😉 The domain name costs money every 2 or 3 yearsHosting the instance costs money.Some hosting companies will charge you extra if you use more than your allocated bandwidth.The admin's time is a monetary cost. @neildarlow

@andyc I suspect Sem just wanted to run .org.uk and thought it would be a good idea to let a few others use it. The problem with that is it starts to grow under your nose, and you have to devote more and more to it. It's not something I wanted to do with @srednivashtar I'm lucky, my hosting is free, and I can do pretty much what I like; it's only the Domain that costs me any money, but I still wouldn't open it up to registration for the very reasons I mentioned.@neildarlow @radix023
