       I came up with a metaphor yesterday to explain ethics in IT:You know how cars have got consistently safer over the last decades, as long as you only count “passengers in newer cars” as people, and not everyone else?That’s what ethics in #IT and especially #Infosec is like: important work to make our field less hostile for marginalised people to work in, but happy to work on systems that hurt them in every other way.

       We spend more time wringing our hands about “responsible disclosure” than the fact that all the platforms we use have blood on their hands, or that the tools we deploy are often used to undermine worker or civilian rights.

       A cold-blooded economist would talk about “externalities”. I just want to work for a company that doesn’t support child stealers, child killers, war crimes, or cops. It feels like a modest, practical expectation AND YET.

       And I’m nothing if not pragmatic. After all, I work on cloud systems, and the big three are up to their neck in ICE contracts and US DoD business, and union busting. I’m not on a high horse, I’m culpable, but it doesn’t even feel like we can have the conversation, individually or collectively. It’s not *safe* to have this conversation.

       If you are in #Infosec or #cybersecurity you probably already understand this, even if you haven’t consciously thought it. We are, at a pinch, allowed to talk about #burnout or #mentalHealth or #ToxicMasculinity or #alcoholism and #depression.But is it safe for you to ask your company to turn down a contract? Do you think your local con will accept your talk, and if they do, who in the audience is noting your name down? If you are already marginalised, all of this risk is much worse.
