People being overwhelmed by picking a Masto instance is just sad. Is the internet bad because you have to pick a website to visit before you can get started? Are smartphones bad because you have to pick an app to open before you can get started? Is your kitchen bad because you have to pick ingredients first before you can start cooking? Jesus fucking Christ

@volpeon people have been conditioned to get everything handed to them and every question pre-answered. The mere *idea* that you have to think for yourself for 5 seconds is absurd for many people.

@volpeon fear of choosing overall, partivularly making tbe WRONG choice. Presumption that you can only have one account and choices are completely irreversible. That's how people think of mail, anyway.

@volpeon I mean... but none of those involve picking a community to be a member of, possibly for a long time.I think it's legitimately a hard thing for newcomers. Especially since they might not even feel confident yet that they know the full significance of what they're choosing.

@volpeon Not that I think it's a reasonable reason to say the fediverse is *bad*.

@volpeon You can try all the ingredients over time. Not so much for digital account.

@sysinshell@pleroma.envs.net Nothing stops you from joining an instance and moving to another if things don't work out? I don't see how it's a big deal, even with communities outside of fedi (see https://mk.vulpes.one/notes/97362ncy36 )

@volpeon I bet the anxiety is largely from thinking it is just as hard/disruptive to move to a new home within Fedi as it is to move here from corporate media sitesI bet a lot of that anxiety would diminish if people understood that it’s easy to move if you’re unhappy with your choice
