If anyone remembers Diaspora, one of its best features was that it had really granular control over your post visibility. You could assign your social contacts into different groups and post to whatever subset of those groups you felt was appropriate.It's baffling to me that this isn't standard among social media platforms.

What I really want to see is a model where the local software is like a VR web browser, only it loads virtual spaces instead of websites - and the virtual spaces live on servers in the form of a plaintext something-or-other on par with HTML - or at least some kind of easily-modifiable open format - so that anyone can make their own VR spaces that are browser-agnostic.Maybe somebody out there is already working on this?The hard part is, how the heck do you handle multiple people interacting in the same space? The actual Web wasn't really built for that sort of thing and doesn't have a good general solution to copy...

Maybe this is a better use for all the cloud gaming technology people are building, like that dumb Google thing nobody wants to use. Except nobody who's building that technology wants to *not* be a gatekeeper of some sort.

@volpeon I mean... but none of those involve picking a community to be a member of, possibly for a long time.I think it's legitimately a hard thing for newcomers. Especially since they might not even feel confident yet that they know the full significance of what they're choosing.

I feel like all these ChatGPT-esque services should, for the sake of honesty, call themselves "Joe Down The Street."That puts things in proper context: You ask Joe Down The Street about something, and he might give you an accurate answer, or he might be misinformed, or he might be straight-up BSing you rather than admitting he doesn't actually know. That Joe guy has a tendency to do that. He's smart, but a bit too full of himself sometimes.Why are you asking Joe Down The Street as opposed to someone else? Maybe you have a good reason. Or maybe there's a better source of information to go to. But if you do ask him, treat what he says the same way you'd treat anything that some random person you don't know tells you.

I do think the fediverse should have as little to do with Facebook as possible.I also think that "sure, I'll sign an NDA to find out what they have to say" is actually pretty reasonable. Might as well get information on their plans - it doesn't imply taking any particular action.I also also think that if the fediverse tears itself apart over this, that's playing right into Facebook's hands. I think a show of solidarity in opposition to them is great, but if people start defederating from instances for them refusing to defederate from instances that refuse to defederate from Facebook or so forth, that quickly becomes silly and counterproductive.Defederate if you must for safety's sake, but don't defederate servers just for them being mistaken about this. That crosses the line from defense into pointless spiting.

Nothing's displaying on my monitors. Motherboard's an old Gigabyte one, but I'm not sure about the BIOS.A quick check inside didn't reveal anything obviously wrong. All the components seem to be well-seated. I moved it to a friend's house and back recently for a game jam,/

I've been seeing more and more images posted without alt text around here, and I think that's unfortunate.So as a PSA: If you're on Mastodon and posting a picture, you can click the "edit" button on the thumbnail to add alt-text with a simple description of the image. Everyone will be happy if you do! Especially folks with vision issues who use a screenreader, folks on slow connections, and folks who just wanna know wtf they're looking at. You'll get more boosts, too.( :boost_ok: )
